Description of Audubon Bird Guide

The Audubon Bird Guide is a free and complete field guide to over 800 species of North American birds, right in your pocket. Built for all experience levels, it will help you identify the birds around you, keep track of the birds you've seen, and get outside to find new birds near you.

With over 2 million downloads to date, it is one of the best and most trusted field guides for North American birds.

NOTE:

Thank you to all our users for the feedback on the new update. We'll be incorporating many of your feature suggestions and fixes in the next few updates. We very much appreciate your help and support.

Based on your feedback, we're currently working on the following issues:
- Restoration of user-created sighting lists. These lists were safely migrated with your account, but an issue is preventing them from being displayed. These will be restored soon in a future update, without any action required on your part.

- The ability to sort species alphabetically by last name in the field guide.

- Improved performance when searching and browsing lists of species, including the ability to quickly jump to a letter of the alphabet.

- Usability improvements, including photo and map display issues, for tablet users

- The ability to access the field guide, nearby eBird sightings, and other app features that don't require user-submitted data without first creating an account

- Other assorted usability and stability fixes

As always, if you need help with the app, or have a suggestion for a new feature, please contact us directly at audubonconnect@audubon.org. Thanks!

KEY FEATURES:

ALL-NEW: BIRD ID
It's now easier than ever to identify a bird you just saw. Enter all you were able to observe—what color was it? How big? What did its tail look like?—and Bird ID will narrow down a list of possible matches for your location and date in real time.

LEARN ABOUT THE BIRDS YOU LOVE
Our field guide features over 3,000 photos, over eight hours of audio clips of songs and calls, multi-season range maps, and in-depth text by leading North American bird expert Kenn Kaufman.

KEEP TRACK OF ALL THE BIRDS YOU SEE
With our completely redesigned Sightings feature, you can keep a record of every bird you encounter, whether you're hiking, sitting on the porch, or simply catching a glimpse of birds out the window. We'll even keep an updated life list for you.

EXPLORE THE BIRDS AROUND YOU
See where the birds are with nearby birding hotspots and real-time sightings from eBird.

SHARE PHOTOS OF THE BIRDS YOU'VE SEEN
Post your photos to the Photo Feed so other Audubon Bird Guide users can see.

GET INVOLVED WITH AUDUBON
Keep up with the latest news from the world of birds, science, and conservation, right on the home screen. Find an Audubon location near you to go birding. Or see where your voice is needed and take action to protect birds and the places they need, right from your app.

FOR OUR EXISTING USERS:
Once you log in with your NatureShare account, your sightings and photos will migrate with you into the new app. If something doesn't look right, don't worry—all of your data is untouched, safe, and secure.

Note: While we work on migrating all of our users' data to the new app, we have temporarily disabled some of the app's community features. In the next few updates, we'll be restoring and adding new features that make it easy and fun to share and view the photos taken by other Audubon Bird Guide users around the country. Stay tuned!

I was really hoping all of the bad reviews were not going to be an issue for me. Unfortunately, that was not the case for me. From the moment I downloaded the app it was stuck. I could not stop the bird sounds or click anywhere else on the page. I had to go into my app settings and force stop. In this day and age, the amount of issues this app has from the get go and from other users is surprising. I was really looking forward to using the app and can see the value which is why I gave 2 stars.

Edit: app works on my tablet but not my phone. Upping to 2 stars because it's still better than other apps, but I'm still bitter. // The app was always buggy, but it still used to be functional. But now not only did I have to make a new account (couldn't change password on the old account), but I can't use the app at all. The search bar is hidden beneath a black banner at the top, so I can't search for birds or add a new location. It would be fine if I had all my data, but I don't.

So far, this app has been great for identifying the birds I can take pictures of! I didn't know we got so many different birds in IL, I'm being happily surprised!! Unfortunately I don't have a great camera on my Galaxy 10+, but it'll take a good likeness. Thank you!!!

Great app so far! This is much more my speed compared to others, in terms of detail. My only issue so far on a scan of the app: it doesn't apply my location when I'm IDing a bird, for example, I'm in Ontario and it won't apply that to filter my base results (I assumed it would). So some of the results when IDing are birds I know for sure are not in the area, such as parakeets! Otherwise, seems solid.

Currently the app is glitchy- I am not able to update/edit dates on my Samsung S21. Location editing is also VERY complicated and glitchy. Frustrating. The date and time correction feature also no longer functions. The bird ID portion of the app is super tho.

Fantastic. Especially for a beginner like me. It is very easy to narrow down your results quickly and efficiently. Has regoins, pictures, and several calls and songs. A must have for anyone into birds! Thank you Audubon for putting this together.

It's ok. I really want this app to be better. The identification function is average at best and a the app is missing a lot of bird species. However, I really appreciate the variety of photos of bird in the different stages.

Worked wonderfully until the most recent update. Now, the app no longer filters birds by state, and the birds can only be sorted alphabetically (sorting by "most common" is nonfunctional). Continuously shows that the "most common" bird in Kansas is Albert's Towhee, which is unequivocally false. Edit: I did report to the beta team and sent a screen recording. I haven't heard back since then (a few weeks ago). After emailing again, I was given a generic response (developers are looking into it).

For a free app, this has been a beautiful and flawless experience. I haven't been using the sighting features, so I can't comment on how well that function works. But as far as a field guide to North American birds, and their calls, I feel so lucky to have come across this. The layout and user interface is spectacular, which makes me want to use it frequently. I'm learning new things everyday now about birds. WELL DONE!

This app is awesome!! Very informative, easy to use, and accessible for those with little to no experience birdwatching. Great for IDing birds or just reading up on local inhabitants. And no ads!! (Also: I saw a lot of reviews saying a recent update was buggy... I downloaded in Dec 2021 and had no issues!)

Great to always have a field guide at hand. However I can never find the species I'm searching for while doing Bird ID - I'm not sure how they have categorized the sounds. Also you cannot search for similar birds by sound or location, and they do not list all of the visually similar birds if there are several. For example, golden-winged warbler is not listed under similar birds for the blue-winged warbler. Really limits the usefulness of this app

I recently put up three bird feeders and are getting many different birds. I am so excited! I thought this app would be a great tool for my bird watching. Unfortunately I had nothing but problems. Can't sign in, can't add a location and other problems. I uninstalled/reinstalled though nothing changed. I am very disappointed. Please fix these problems.

The last several updates have been highly detrimental: (1) slow to load, (2) search function isn't as intuitive, (3) unable to drop pins to designate sighting locations, (4) really REALLY don't like the daily folder layout for sighting history -- I use Audubon to keep my life list; now I have to search through to find when I first sighted this bird or that. It's a shame, because this app was how I got into birding and it's just not very useful to me anymore, except as a resource for audio IDs.

I used to be able to bring up bird calls when there was no signal by selecting that call and listening to it BEFORE I visited a place there was no cell service. Then it would allow me to replay it later, I guess by storing it it some memory. Now I can't do that. So if there's poor cell signal (a common situation when birding) I can't use playback of the bird call. Now, there has to be good call signal. That was the primary reason I used the app, and with the update, it's gone.

Wealth of knowledge to absorb! This app has really helped me with my birding identification. Between the multiples photos of species at different age ranges to the recorded vocals and location tracking/sights map you can get lost for hours. It is extremely easy to navigate the app. I love being able to virw other peoples sightings and where it was also having the option to make hidden lists (home.) Thabk you for creating this and increasing my passion for these beautiful animals ❤

I love the concepts this app presents. Thing is, a lot of the steps to log sightings are broken. Additionally, any time I need to type something in anywhere, the keyboard pops up, but my text doesn't show up anywhere on the screen. Will hang onto it in the hopes that someone will fix it! :-/

Super handy for when you're just out and about and can't bring your Peterson's guide with you. However: when adding a sighting, entering the location is somewhere between difficult and impossible. Several of the thumbnail images are inaccurate (most notably the same images for the blue jay and California scrub jay and the Steller's jay and the Florida scrub jay.)

I really enjoy using the Audubon Bird Guide app to track what birds I have seen! It has helped me stay focused on observing birds in a way I enjoy. Years ago I had a paper notebook where I tracked what birds I had seen - and things like the first siting of a Robin in Michigan. Now that I live in North Carolina (and those lists didn't make the move south) I am excited to restart a life-list with this App. The structure it provides has helped maintain my interest. And combining it with some solid short summaries that are adequate when my bird ID books aren't available is nice. I'd recommend this to new birders who want to start getting more serious or more consistent in their bird watching - and who want to enjoy bird watching. Only suggestion -have a version that runs on a PC so I can check my list from my work PC and from the window I look out of each day.
