Description of English Dictionary - Offline

The free offline English dictionary application explains the meaning of English words! Definitions are based on English Wiktionary. Fast search, easy and functional user interface, optimized also for tablets.
Ready to go: it works offline without any further file to download!

Features
♦ More than 445000 english definitions and large number of inflected forms
♦ You can leaf through words using your finger (swipe right and left)
♦ Manage your bookmarks, personal notes and search history
♦ Crossword help: the symbol ? can be used in place of single unknown letter. The symbol * can be used in place of any group of letters. The fullstop symbol . can be used to mark the end of a word.
♦ Random search button (shuffle), useful to learn new words
♦ Share word definition using other apps, like gmail or whatsapp
♦ Compatible with Moon+ Reader, FBReader and other applications via share button
♦ Backup&restore configuration, personal notes and bookmarks on local memory, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box clouds (available only if you have installed these applications on your device)
♦ Camera search via OCR Plugin, available only on devices with back camera. (Settings->Floating Action Button->Camera). The OCR Plugin has to be downloaded from Google Play.

Fuzzy search
♦ To search words with prefix, e.g. starting with 'moon', please write moon* and the dropdown list will show the words starting with 'moon'
♦ To search words with suffix, e.g. ending with 'moon', please write *moon. and the dropdown list will show the words ending with 'moon'
♦ To search words containing a word, e.g. 'moon', just write *moon* and the dropdown list will show the words containing 'moon'

Your settings
♦ Black and white themes with user defined text colors (press menu-->select Settings-->click on Theme)
♦ Optional Floating Action Button (FAB) supporting one of the following actions: Search, History, Favorites, Random search and Share option; Optional shake action with similar actions.
♦ Persistent Search option to get automatic keyboard at startup
♦ Text to speech options, including selection of British or American accent (press menu-->select Settings-->click on Text to Speech-->select Language)
♦ Number of items in history
♦ Customisable font size and line spacing, default screen orientation
♦ Start up option: home page, most recent word, random word or word of the day

I really love this app, its the best dictionary I've had and I've used it for as long as I can remember. However since the last update, I haven't been able to use the text to speech feature even once, it no longer works. At all. This bothers me in no small measures because I'd hate to look for another app and because text to speech is a huge part of why I loved the app so much. Could you fix this?

- I have been using this app since many many years and absolutely love it. -It tells you if the word is a noun/pronoun/adjective etc with an example in the form of a sentence. - Reads out the word and also the whole text. - However, some pronunciations seem wrong going by what one already knows and by using Google reference. - Overall, a great free, and absolutely useful app.

loved it. but i think it would be better if pictures could be included when we search for meaning of words. sometimes when i search for a word like magpie (a type of bird), would be real helpful to have pictures of it too. overall it's a great app. will change it to 5 stars when you guys add the picture feature.

I love the offline feature and also the widget that gives a random word, very useful, those two things. Minor issues I have is that the widget takes up too much screen space. In a previous update, it was fine and fit snug with the rest of apps, please bring that back. Something else that can be implemented is refreshing the search bar on each app entry so we do not need to delete the previous word - makes it more efficient to search quickly.

Best Dictionary in the Virtual Universe . It is very easy to use. Gives in details the origin of a word. Besides, its interface is very smooth. Delightful background makes learning joyful. I have been using it for a long time after having a smartphone . I have no complain. I want to thank the developers who have created such a nice software. Love this app. Easy to use and 8/9 times, definitions are sufficient to make one understand the words. But I wish there were more examples of the words in sentences. I also have issues with txt to speech. Works for 1 day and following day I'd have fiddle with the txt to speech settings until it works. It's frustrating.I've tried redownloading it but the problem just won't go away. Please fix this! Consider new skins and layouts as well for a fresh look? Thanx.

Has almost every word in its catalogue and the definitions are on point. Gets updated regularly. It is free and offline. You can bookmark words for future reference. Add notes to words. Can backup your bookmarks and history. Has options to alter the theme to your preference. And on top of that, is completely ad-free! What else could you ask for?!

This is a very helpful app. However, I have noticed that since I last updated it in September, text to speech failure has become very frequent. I can't recall ever having this problem with the old version. Please fix it. PS (Jan 7, 2019): Text to speech failure is even more frequent in the latest update. This is the only flaw I've noticed in this app. I wonder why the developers have chosen to be tardy at fixing it. I mean, what's the use of users' reviews if they aren't utilized appropriately?

Unable to use text to speech function since last update. And despite checking and ensuring all enabling toggles are in place - nothing! Is there something I missed? This feature has always been handy when ensuring correct pronunciation. I am still able to use the app; it remains functional and a very useful tool. Though sadly unable to access one if its features.

Best dictionary period. I've been using this app for about 6 years now and it has never disappointed; not even once. The only thing is that could bother someone is that the interface seems very basic but it is functional, simple, easy to understand for new users and it perfectly works as it is supposed to. So, hats off guys. Brilliantly executed.

Hi!!! Clearly, this is the only English dictionary app I've found so far that allows syncing and saving my data (locally and on cloud). But when I tried to save the backup on my Google drive, the saved file was unresponsive and not in the supported format. I don't have a lot of local storage, so I thought cloud storage would work, but that's not the case. Can someone please solve this issue for me? I was really looking forward to using the app.

Best offline dictionary. Contains almost every word there is, with correct pronunciation, synonyms, autonyms, examples and even the etymology. It is also fairly regular in updates and the UI is very user friendly. Highly recommended. Even though this app is at its best, I hope that developers come up with something that'll make it even better. Keep it up and Happy New Year 2019!!

This is an excellent app, i highly recommend, to anyone who wishes to expand their vocabulary having command of English Language. It also contains some great features; pronunciation of words, customising the app, speech explanations to name a few. Also i haven't, as yet, seen any annoying ads. Overall, what's not to like. Easy to use once familiar, the guide illustrates how to get the best performance. 👌👏. Download and see.

Highly recommended app and probably the best in the entire list of dictionaries as it's ad-free and also has an extremely user-friendly interface. The only update I would like to suggest is the speech to text feature which saves time and also helps in speaking the word I'm searching with a more accurate pronunciation (as we do in Google searches). Rating 3 stars for now, and eagerly waiting for an update!

Great service from a great app. My only gripe would probably be with the UI, which in my opinion, is outdated and needs a refresh. [EDIT] I think it would also be convenient to retain the position of a word in a list after its selection (e.g. when selecting a word from History); that way there is no need to scroll down over and over to where you last left off if for instance you're reviewing the list

This application, both as an app and a dictionary, is rich, beautiful, well designed, well performing, nice, fresh, simple, intuitive, elegant, serious, handy. All of them good qualities. I am yet to see any ad or otherwise annoying feature. There are updates every now and then. It works offline, and it is lightweight. It does have room for improvement, certainly. I do love and would recommend it.
