Fun to scroll the bird lists to identify by sight. "identify by sound" feature has never been able to identify anything, even when I get a clear recording of a common bird that I'm looking right at 10 feet away. Requiring location turned on when I have a regional bird pack installed is bad design. Many people don't keep location services on for privacy reasons and when I want to identify a bird call I don't think about turning location on. Adding location to a recording afterwards doesn't help.

It is so wonderful to be able to find out which bird is making what bird calls and songs. Although not perfect (sometimes there is a call that doesn't register or sometimes it won't catch a call that a bird only makes once or twice), but it is pretty darn fantastic at identifying birds through song. I especially love the feature where once the birds are ID'd, their picture is then highlighted whenever they sing or make their call. I now really notice and appreciate nature even more on my walks!

It's a cool app but needs more info presented to the user. Sound identification doesn't work unless Location is on + a web connection via Wi-Fi or mobile data. When a recording fails, the app should notify that both must be on. It was a surprise. I'd have thought the ~900 MB (West Coast) database I downloaded for the app to use would be sufficient.

I have used the Merlin app with varying levels of success for over a year now. After installing the app again recently, it has failed to identify a single bird in my area. The app turns up with no results for a black crow-sized bird doing anything in my area. I have sent over a dozen reports of no matches, and I hope they fix this

This makes it so much easier for amateur bird watchers to identify what they're seeing. The simple identifiers of size, color, and activity make it really easy to figure out what my bird is. On top of that, the sound ID is so great at picking up and identifying calls and songs that I can now know what I'm looking for before I see them. The only thing I wish we're different is the ability to add a bird to my list from the sound ID or from browsing birds, not just the main ID menu.

I absolutely love this app! This has been the greatest experience learning about birds around my property and realizing the birds I never realized we're here! Lately, the app has been freezing and crashing. I'm not sure if it's because of my phone or the app, but it really sucks when it does that, and I'm trying to get a sound ID. It's still five stars. This is absolutely a five-star app completely free. You learn so much, you can log the birds that you discover, it's absolutely amazing.

Over time, sound ID has gotten less and less accurate. Photo ID has improved, but sound ID constantly gives the wrong birds and won't list the bird sitting right in front of me. As a result, I cannot help the sound ID "learn" because I can't click "this is my bird." It also crashes constantly when the bird I need is a guess aside from the first in the list. It crashed before but now it does so more. Love the labs work, but either the machine learning or data quality needs better design.

This app was wonderful. It identified many birds flawlessly. Then it just stopped working. It continually said it didn't know where I was so it wouldn't even try to guess at the bird sounds. My location was on and I had done everything the same as previously. I ended up uninstalling. I am giving it another try in case it glitched but... we'll see.

LOVE the app. However, quite unstable when trying to do anything else while using SoundID at the same time, like take a picture on the phone's camera app, or manage an eBird list. The recording stops, and the whole app locks. Requires closing it, re- opening it, and then waiting for it to fail before being able to start it and use it again.

Merlin has been an amazing app to use and explore. It's not only clear, intuitive, and full of more information than one could ever hope for, it's also really beautifully presented! It doesn't look clunky/outdated as expect of such a robust database from academics. It not only shows various pictures of the birds, but the sexual dimorphism as birds mature. Makes IDs easy. The sound ID works better than most song ID apps! 10/10. I can't shut up about this great app to everyone I know!

When it works it is great. However it chooses not to save my birds most of the time. The other issue I have is it locks up on me many times. I live in a heavily wooded area so i have found many birds I have never seen in my life at 65 years old. This app is notorious for freezing up and not saving anything. The only way i can keep a record is if I keep my eyes on the screen at all times and try yo get a screen shot when I get one come in. I have reloaded it several times without luck.

This app is great, the UX is incredibly simple and effective. It's super easy to use and works great (I've mostly been using the sounds ID). The only feature I would like to see be a little better is that the provided sample recordings (after the bird has been identified) don't necessarily match even closely to the song or call that you've just recorded, since it IDs the particular call in the recording it would be nice to highlight a sample recordings that also contained that call.

Awesome in almost every way! Record for too long and it will never open that list again. Sometimes crashes in the middle of recording and so is not working but also says it is, so it won't close or restart. Aside from those issues, the occasional misidentifications are more than acceptable for how simply wonderful this app is, so useful in many ways, making me a MUCH better Birder by ear! I've become addicted to using it!

Keeps saying the app has a bug and to reinstall it when the manufacturer has an update. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it won't identify birds by sound. It's still useful to be able to play the songs and look up by pictures. It's a great idea and no ads - too good to be true. I hope they work out the kinks, I'd love to use the sound id.

Absolutely FREE! NO ADS! Simply the best bird watching and identifying partner you could have. The record to identify feature is incredible. I was among several different species of birds all singing at once and it picked them all out and identified them, it even picked up a Crow call that was a long way away that I didn't notice until playing back the audio. There are so many wonderful features in this program it's hard to cover them all. This delightful program is very intuitive. Easy to use!

I am so pleasantly surprised at how good this app is! It is super dependable about picking up (live via recording from my phone) and identifying birds with incredible accuracy. The features such as looking at results to see a variety of pictures of the bird plus recordings of their calls? I love it! I'll regularly play calls back to birds and draw them in within 10 feet and I'm able to get a good look at them. I can't say enough good things. We show and share this app with many people. And free!

The app overall is fantastic! I reserved a star though as it still needs a few tweaks. Recently, I lost 2 lengthy lists while in the midst of recording-too easy to accidentally touch the unlabeled X that deletes the recording. Adding a 2-step process to delete would eliminate that. Also, with each update it seems a bit less sensitive to identifying birds in the distance. Finally, using Android and IPhone simultaneously, each phone picked up a few birds the other did not.

I see here and searching online that a lot of people are having trouble with the Sound ID feature. One Merlin reply says disabling Google Assistant worked for some. I tried, didn't work. I do notice that it will record lower frequency sounds but not high pitch bird sounds, seems like a high-pass filter problem. Anyway, a work-around is to record via a simple record app, then import that file into Merlin. Works, but it's a hassle. Update: This has been fixed. Back to 5 stars!

- Now, when you tap on a bird in your Sound ID recordings, you can cycle through multiple results for that bird. This is a great way to compare different results and find the one that you're most confident in.- We've also made it easier to explore your Sound ID recordings by highlighting the singing birds, same as the live recording. This makes it easy to see which birds are singing and to identify and learn the songs and calls.

1.4.1 - improvements to Explore BirdsNew Merlin bar charts are an exciting way to view how common birds are at a location during different times of year, and let you explore migration anywhere in the world. You can find the bar charts by opening up Explore Birds, and using the filter options to select the location and date you want to explore under Likely Birds. The bar charts use eBird data to let you know at a glance how common each species is for every week of the year.
