Description of Orbot: Tor for Android

Orbot is a free VPN and proxy app that empowers other apps to use the internet more securely. Orbot uses Tor to encrypt your Internet traffic and then hides it by bouncing through a series of computers around the world. Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis.

No extra eyes know what apps you are using, and when, or can stop you from using them.

Notifications never go away and the VPN activates in the background, usually interrupting something im the process. Edit: even when disabling the setting to start automatically, Orbot will continue to do so.

In previous weeks, Orbot Had worked effectively, however, over the past few days, none of the URLs that I have tried to browse via orbot in VPN mode have been accessible. I also notice that when I attempt to browse in VPN mode, the in-app meter does not show any web traffic.

Thank you! I never thought I'd have to refer to my supposedly progressive country as an oppressive regime that heavily censors sites the rest of the world are freely able to use, including at least one news site that is politically completely unaligned. Disgusting, and intolerable.

Please add more pluggable transports in Christic way as I am in desperate need to access the freedom network every day. I hope that the damn communists can go to the hell as soon as possible. Update: Please add obfs4 bridges back to 2 instead of one. Thank you very much. I don't want to repeat to ask again but I need them. Update: Please add v7a back. I couldn't use an outdated version to put my safety at risks.

Update 12 Mar 2020: Seems to be starting normally now. Hi. Love this app and worked great until about a month or two ago when it stopped opening on start up. I downloaded the updated version a week or so ago but it made no difference. Turned the auto start option in settings on and off and ran a Malwarebytes scan but no luck. Android 6.0.1. Also noticing some sites like Brighteon appear to have black listed your servers or detect it's a vpn and gives a network error message on any media you try.

This new version does not perform anywhere as well as the previous version. I've tried several ways and times to get it working. Takes too long to bootstrap, and at 100% always displays that 'Orbot Is Starting'. There are bugs that must be addressed. I erased the new version and reinstalled the previous version which works fine.

This is the thing I searched for, It can actually connect you to the tor net from your phone, you can even change your IP in between your browsing that gives an extra level of security while roaming in the roads of devil. I only have one problem, it somehow closes itself sometimes and also it never appears in the recent apps tray. Any legit cause?

It needs a possibility to proxy all apps on a phone with just hitting one single button. Orbot needs a cache and data delete several times a week and a fresh restart set-in to keep it running. And to always set in 600 apps manually one by one is (understandably) a bit annoying. Which is the reason for me to go with one of the old 15er versions, and never the latest version. But nonetheless it's a good app together with a good VPN app hand-in-hand to camouflage your real IP address.

Very disappointing. Even with 'sleep when no wifi' selected it hangs up or won't connect at all once I'm back in range. Also periodically disconnects for no apparent reason, hangs on 'starting' and I find I'm having to jump through a million captcha hoops to browse pages that were never an issue before. In all instances I'm forced to uninstall/reinstall to fix. I really expected a better quality product.

This app is fantastic for bypassing firewalls but requires a lot of redownloading almost Everytime you turn it off. Aside from the self explanatory flaw you can easily bypass firewalls by turning on "share proxy interface with WiFi peers" and connecting the device to your phone with a hotspot. Overall a fantastic but can certainly use improvements.

It worked perfect the 1st and 2nd time I used it. After that it didn't work at all and actually prevented me from connecting to the internet. This was all done on the same internet connection within the span of 2 days. Nothing changed, no settings or configurations. It just randomly stopped working

It was excellent till the recent update when despite switching it off it continued to connect. Checked repeatedly but the icon showed it was off though in actual fact it was operational and VPN mode was on. Please revert to the previous version which did not have a mind of it's own. I'd have given this 5 rating had you not updated it. Plz address this issue as no one likes Apps with an automatic operating capability. This AI stuff with a mind of it's own is not acceptable. Uninstalled it now.

The VPN function blocks all traffic if it hangs (which it doesn't indicate, you just have no traffic at all). To get connected, you need to disable the VPN function- which defeats the whole purpose. And it seems to have a bug in there, seems to be hanging often. Only one star for it being unusable!

Works great. Just 1 issue, the recent version stays permanently connected to the VPN even when tor is disconnected/stopped. I have to toggle off VPN mode every time after use. Can yous please revert this to the previous behaviour? It was better that way, pressing the onion to stop also used to disconnect from the VPN but not toggle off the vpn switch. Or at least add a setting for it. thanks

Ever since last two updates, TOR direct bridge does not bootstrap/connect fully anymore. Randomly crashes, doesn't connect at all sometimes, none of the alternative bridging options work. Disappointed therefore uninstalling as of literally right now. Fix your screw-up & I'll reconsider using again. Looking for an alternative application for now.

I like the idea and was able to use the app with Orfox just fine. However when I close the app I find it constantly running in the background and am unable to stop it despite multiple attempts to do just that. As I don't want to see my battery getting chewed up I had to uninstall. will check it out again in a few months to see if an updated version is better.

Unfortunately had to uninstall as it drained my battery in just over six hours. I had 95% reduced to 10%. No other app was running but I had been using this one. Obviously disconnected when I finished using but must have been running in background. This is a worryingly high level of battery consumption and I've never experienced anything like this prior to installing it. Googled the issue and I'm not alone !

This is the only app which provides us privacy to the fullest. Don't complain about less speeds because when you switch it on, it connects to different computers located somewhere in the world providing maximum privacy without leaving any trace of your data. I loved it and would definitely recommend it for everyone. ♥️
