Description of Messages by Google

Messages by Google is the official Google app for messaging over Rich Communication Services (RCS) with fallback to SMS/MMS. Get more done in your messages with one-tap calendar reminders and emoji replies, and keep your conversations secure with spam protection and end-to-end encryption so you can focus on connecting with the people and businesses you care about — no matter what device they use.

Know when friends are typing or when they've read your message, share high-resolution images and videos, easily add people to a group chat, and experience an all-around richer messaging experience.

End-to-end encryption secures your eligible communications, so no one (including Google and third parties) can read or view your messages and attachments except the person you’re messaging.

Ever since Android integrated Google into its text messaging service, texts have been so spotty with sending and any image attachment is real unlikely to go through. It's goes back and forth between sending with the web as it's base (when it fails the most bc it needs the other person to also have messages open or be "online" or something??) and regular text style where it actually sends. Can't seem to get the ladder to stick / be the primary option. Beyooond frustrating

I just switched to this app to handle my text messages. I like how I can now send and receive reactions to my texts. And it seems pretty stable so far. I don't like that I can't split up my contacts into separate conversations (groups) like I could with my previous Messages app. In my previous Messages app, I created a group called 'Family' where I could group all the texts from my family members. Also, I'm having a hard trying to change the notification sound for this application.

After the latest app update, I was no longer able to reliably send RCS messages. They would never show as "delivered" and the contact was offline. I deactivated/reactivated RCS, but this didn't help. I tried clearing cache, but this didn't help. I uninstalled all updates and disabled auto-update, and everything is working again with the old version. I did Send Feedback, so hopefully this gets fixed. Running on Android 14. This app is too critical to get totally broken by auto-updates!

This is my preferred app for messaging. But there's one thing that drives me nuts. When your in you car and Android auto is connected all photo messages come through blurry. I understand this may be a safety feature but why not change it to just load when out of the car? I have to ask people to resend each time. Other than that hiccup... I like the fact you can react to peoples texts like iPhone users and the sorting of the actual messages with ample features

App needs to pulse continuously a dot or something when a message comes in and your phone is in screensaver mode (IE Black screen). Right now, I'm having to use a 3rd party app called Pixel Pulse, but it’s not that reliable. Just having a small flashing dot on the OLED screen when the screen is off and charging to indicate a notification has come in would be helpful.

UPDATE: Got too annoyed with having to switch back and forth just to have a seamless experience searching through messages and attachments. Technological advances have come too far for Google messages to be so behind with just the basic functionality. I've sent plenty reviews. I know updates can take a while to execute. Having the emoji reaction capability isn't worth it for me. I'll wait to see if they get it together down the line. Back to the factory messaging in the meantime

I have not been able to have RCS connecting successfully. Seems to be always trying but never connects, rendering the service useless. I even reached out to the carrier, and they could not help me fix it either. Despite all efforts, I had to uninstall the app sadly. Hope there is a fix to this issue since I have tried everything in my power to solve and no improvement.

Edited to update: I had to uninstall and reinstall the app and now it works. There's still occasions that it doesn't send my pictures or videos, but I guess that could be on the receiving end because it shows on mine, but not theirs. I've had zero complaints until today. I just realized I'm not receiving any text messages except from the other Google phone on my plan. Not sure why. I've tried everything Google suggests. Now what?

I think I'm experiencing some sort of update glitch. I'll attach a picture and send a message with it, in one text, but then when I hit send, the picture disappears and only a text is sent. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing it but I've considered getting off Google messages now. For months now, pictures are coming thru terribly grainy from iPhone to Andriod. My settings are set to high quality too.

A recent update changed the way archived messages work. It used to be that if you archived a message chain, and then a new one on that same chain came in, it would take it out of archive and put it at the top of the list. Now it stays in the archived folder. Please bring back the old way, or give us an option to set it. EDIT: Wow they responded and told me to force quit and then clear the cache and it's working again! I did not think that would solve it but it did! Awesome five stars!

I can't believe this is the official Google messaging app. While it is nice to be able to send and receive reactions from iPhone users, that's basically the only upside. App is pretty buggy overall with notifications being hit or miss at times. Now my recipients are receiving double, triple or even quadruple duplicate messages from me. Looks like I'll have to go to another messages app.

Pros: Google proprietary messenger. Clean, simple, easy to use. Cons: lack ability to have message delays. For some reason, can't highlight specific message text, can only copy entire message. Could be slightly more customizable as well (being able to change colors of text boxes, etc.) Update: lost categories in an update so removed a star. That was one of the best features.

I have always loved this app, however, since the update to 14, the one group text I use the most isn't showing. I can see all the responses for a second, then when I tap on the conversation, it just disappears! I've turned my phone off several times, but nothing changes. Another thing I've noticed is the herky jerky movement when scrolling, it jumps. Very difficult on my eyes. Also in some games. I've checked permissions, I have everything the way it always was. Please fix!

I too, agree with others on this recent update, it sucks. I was a BIG fan of the sorting from personal and business messages, made it so much easier. Another issue I'm having is I won't receive my text messages right away, happened twice already, within a weeks span. Don't know the reason for that happening, but it was very inconvenient. Please bring back the sorting tab.

I like messages. It works really good for me, with my blindness disability, because it is really accessible for me to use. Also, I would rather use messages by Google anyhow, because this app has better features, as far as being able to change your ringtone for your messages if you want to. Also, because if you have to turn your phone off, or restart it, you don't have a bunch of text messages loading after they have already been read before you restart your phone, great APP!!!

Another review said it perfectly: This app has always worked for me. However, a recent update changed how my messages are organized. I used to have 2 tabs at the top - one for messages received from contacts and one for non-contact messages (messages for shipping notices, Dr. apts, bill notifications, etc.). I can't figure out how to get that back. I LOVED that feature. I would love to have it back.

This latest version removed the option to sort messages by category. Irritating. I've also sent reply messages that don't transmit without resending repeatedly depending on the recipient's phone type. Finally, it is impossible to delete individual messages in a thread; instead, you end up deleting the entire thread. Because of these significant issues, I find myself more often than not going back to the Samsung messaging app, which is more nimble.

I find it hard to read. I like to save conversations in another place so it keeps my incoming text box clean. I would like to use different bubbles or color background for different conversations or people. Just like some email boxes can do. And finally, the notification dot...use a different color so you can see the notification on the widget, or make it customizable. I couldn't take it anymore, had to uninstall.
