Description of Opensignal - 5G, 4G Speed Test

Opensignal is a free to use, advert free mobile connectivity and network signal speed test app.

Speed test for mobile and Wifi internet
Opensignal speed tests measure your mobile connectivity and signal strength. Opensignal runs a 5 second download test, 5 second upload test and a ping test to provide a consistently accurate measurement of the internet speed you will likely experience. The speed test runs on common internet CDN servers. The internet speed result is calculated with the middle range of samples.

Video playback test
Slow video load time? Video buffering? More time waiting than watching? Opensignal’s video test plays a 15 sec video snippet to test and log load time, buffering, and playback speed issues in real-time to show you exactly what to expect with HD and SD videos on your network.

Connectivity and speed test coverage map
Always know where to find the best coverage and fastest speeds with Opensignal’s network coverage map. The map shows signal strength down to street level using speed test and signal data from local users. With network stats on local network operators, you can check coverage ahead of a trip, check the internet and download strength in remote areas, compare your network to other providers in the area, arrange the best local SIM.

Cell tower compass
The cell tower compass allows you to see which direction the closest or strongest signal is coming from, enabling you to more accurately use broadband and signal boosting technology.
Note: The cell tower compass uses aggregate data and accuracy issues can occur in certain areas. We’re striving to improve this feature and thank you for your patience.

Connection availability stats
Opensignal records the time you’ve spent on 3G, 4G, 5G, WiFi or had no signal at all. This allows you to see where you are getting the service you’re paying for from your network provider. If not, use this data and the individual speed tests to highlight connectivity and signal issues to your mobile network operator.

Awful. It looks like it's downloading or connected through WiFi as the THREE signal is practically none existent. -117dBm of signal and it says everything is fine.

It describes itself as telling you that you can determine signal strength for cellular networks, yet there is no opportunity to check other networks other than the one you are registered on. I can do that just by looking at the bars on my home screen. Where is the feature to check other networks that I don't subscribe to so that I can see if there is a better provider? This is pretty worthless.

The best feature in this app is the ability to see and find your carriers tower. It shows you the direction of the closest tower. Simply walk in that direction to get a better signal. Also tower info is nice too.

Lovely App doing most of what I require. I originally chose it specifically for the modular notification functions, sadly these don't appear to work. The app does not request the notification permission and accordingly does not provide them. Unsure it this is Android 14 specific, but needs fixing.

Testing is all wrong. Your app measured my 4g at 149 mBps where every other speed test has it around 2 mBps. Hard to trust any of the data on this app after that. Edit: After further use of the app I noticed that everything has the wrong speed but it appears to be consistent and proportional. So I felt it deserved some leniency.

Confirms how poorly AT&T services it's customers; even though I upgraded to a 'unlimited data' plan. Apparently my phone was too old; new phone & Sim, now seems to work well. AT&T is doing work on towers in area. OPENSIGNAL shows that my area only has 4G. AT&T replaced sim card May23, only loss of signal occurs when large numbers of premium AT&T users in area (I'm a prepaid customer).

This App still does not accurately display the correct tower that you are connected. Other apps show I am connected to different towers and moving to other towers as the signal changes. Open signal always displays connected to the same incorrect tower with no changes. Many of the towers are not found on open signal maps. open signal tower maps have not been updated in the past year or more. This app should also be updated to display the band that the tower is using like other apps.

A week into this now. It still says no information available . The app also does not tell what company owns what towers so you may see the choices. It does appear to have a real time arrow pointing to the tower you are allegedly connected to but again, no way of knowing who owns it. It does not tell you after both speed tests it offer if your results are good, bad, or indifferent. The average layman could not possibly decipher whether the numbers given for yp and download speeds are good.

It works to an extent. The tower locations are very inaccurate. Going to earth or maps and looking at satellite views at the location where the app says there is a tower usually shows no tower. However speed tests and coverage are pretty accurate. To everyone saying that they can see a tower but its not showing up on the map. Therefore useless. Towers arent just built for cell providers...

I have tried this for years on multiple devices and carriers. I have told them about the problems, but it has never changed. The map / data is years out of date, and therefore useless. Areas I have provided data to them by using the app, have never shown up on their coverage map. An example is iwireless, (which was merged into Tmobile a year ago,) for this Iowa only carrier they show coverage points for all over the country. They won't let you select T mobile in states they have been operating in for YEARS, (MT, IA,) AND they show coverage data for the carrier there. The maps do include lots of bad data, from phones in airplanes

The App has a nice feel to it but as far as it doesn't speak highly of the way this app collects its measurement. So as far in Wi-Fi it's results are almost.5-5.0 On the slow side. It offers a video version in its speed rating. The video always looks good. So that's a minus. To get the numbers erased in prior test This app gives you no choice. Try another free tester.

Improved my signal tenfold, immediately, on test setup and rough guess at the direction of the nearest tower. I have a Verizon 4G phone which, prior to the booster, picked up only 1.2 Mbps download, 191 kbps upload, with 315 ms latency. Always had just one bar, frequently dropped calls. I now have just two bars, but 11.2 Mbps download, 1.57 Mbps upload, with 48 Ms latency. And it's not even up on a pole nor adjusted to the best angle yet! Phenomenal improvement.

Removed ability to export the data to the SD card randomly for no reason, and also just stopped collecting data, so the network availability chart for the last month is just at 0, neat. So now after they updated the app to a new interface, there is still no export option and it just doesn't even work, android 10, all permissions granted, 0 measurements after a day. Save your battery and don't install

I've been looking at a number of cell tower locators and this app blows the others away. It seems to show me all the cell towers even the ones I'm not connected to plus it shows me both T-Mobile and Sprint but not at the same time which is puzzling nevertheless show me the location of the towers and having an arrow that points in the right direction is far superior to any of the other apps for cell tower location

So far so good. Nice utility for your cell tower location as well as most other locations by cell company giving data on latencies and download/upload speeds, location, direction of tower and more. Other utilities include speed and video stream tests. Not a bad set up. The only complaint is there's no legend for the coverage colors. But that should improve with time.

Not particularly useful for comparing providers. For example, it won't show you cell tower locations for any provider other than your own, so if you wanted to see who operates that tower right by your house, it's impossible to search to find out. Kind of pointless if you were interested in getting better service for yourself.

Inaccurate cell tower locations data. It thinks cell towers are at residential locations. I tested by going near those locations and my signal does not get any better. Other sources and apps save the towers are much farther away and when I go to those my signal gets better. This app's data is inaccurate. It's kind of weird because it lists the towers' IDs and everything.

For many months I have been working on which company provides me better and reliable cellphone coverage. With this app and some little effort, I was able to obtain a real network map to apply it towards my personal commute areas and their actual speeds. There is always room for improvement, but once again. OpenSource and Zero Ads.
