Description of Speech Recognition & Synthesis

Power your device with the magic of Google’s text-to-speech and speech-to-text technology. Google Speech-to-Text functionality
Speech Recognition provides speech-to-text functionality to Google and other third party apps to convert what you say to text. For example, it can be used by:
• Google Maps when you use your voice to search places
• Recorder App to transcribe your recordings on device
• Phone App Call Screen feature to get a real-time transcription of your caller
• Accessibility apps like Voice Access for operating your device through voice
• Dictation or keyboard apps you might use to dictate text messages through voice
• Apps that contain a search by voice feature so that you can quickly search for your favorite shows or songs
• Language learning apps that recognize what you say as you practice a new language
• …and many other applications in Play Store
To use Google Speech-to-Text functionality on your Android device, go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Default apps > Assist App. Select Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google as your preferred voice input engine.
Google Text-to-Speech functionality
Speech Services powers applications to read the text on your screen aloud. For example, it can be used by:
• Google Play Books to “Read Aloud” your favorite book
• Google Translate to speak translations aloud so you can hear the pronunciation of a word
• Talkback and accessibility applications for spoken feedback across your device
• …and many other applications in Play Store
To use Google Text-to-Speech functionality on your Android device, go to Settings > Languages & Input > Text-to-Speech output. Select Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google as your preferred engine.
Note, on many Android devices, Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google is already available, but you can update to the latest version here.

Currently very displeased with the update process. I do not have Wi-Fi networks available, and it will not cancel the update after pressing the cancel button that is so proudly displayed on my screen. Two questions, first one is why the council button does not work? Second one is why it cannot be updated without Wi-Fi, (it shouldn't be that hard to make that option available).

Half the time, using speech to text stops working, or what I say is delayed by about 30 seconds or more. When I go to clean the cache, the cache is empty. Other times, I am speaking in English, and it types in Spanish. There no instructions anywhere on how to fix these issues. Half the time, the app Miss understands what I say and types the wrong words or stops before I'm finished saying three words. Very annoyed!

The British voice I've been using has become corrupted. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the Google TTS app, but the voice is still corrupted. It is the only one that I like. I tried to get an API key from the Google cloud in order to use the new WaveNet voices, but it is so complicated, I gave up. I look forward to when you will have a separate app for the WaveNet voices. I don't mind paying. But I don't want to go through a thousand hoops to get them from your cloud.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!! I'm having the same issue as well. I just turned off the notification for the app. Now it can keeping searching for a network all it wants. When you go into your settings. In the search box type speech services and t should come up. Click it. It opens the app info and click notifications and turn off. That's it.

This used to be very good, but often it gets my entire sentence correct, but then goes back and deletes about half my sentence. It has really gone haywire with the recent version and I find myself having to edit the text repeatedly. It also does weird things like putting "mi" when I say miles. Just now, it tried to put a question mark at the end of that last sentence. Why? I have no idea, but I'm doing half this review with the keyboard because text to speech is so problematic.

I prefer dictating rather than typing because most of the time I am hands-free. I've noticed the high reviews but I have to disagree about the performance of this app. It's horrible! Of course, we all know that we need to speak clearly and enunciate every word but 5 times out of 10, this app misinterprets every other word incorrectly. Frustrating as all heck! I don't speak with cotton in my mouth and I am loud enough. The problem lies with Google Text-to-Speech. It does not warrant 5 stars but only 2-stars in my opinion. Sorry! Ironically, it does pick up every cuss word with 100% accuracy! Go figure!

Works inconsistently. It's horrible when switching languages. Switching languages has to be done manually. Doesn't put periods or commas when dictating. Annoyingly improper autocorrect feature. While improved on grammer, the basics are still needed to be fixed. I often type instead of using voice recognition. Seems like several years ago, the app was more robust in recognizing different languages.

This app is terrible since they updated it. It gives me nothing but problems. Most of the time, it turns off a couple of seconds into speaking. It also makes all these corrections all the time now, which is kind of annoying but sometimes helpful. One of the worst things is that when I speak, it just strings all the words together with no spaces. Please fix all these issues, Google!

Really really frustrated with recent updates. The app has worked well for the most part. 4 last couple years but is now inserting periods and other punctuation points randomly as well as weird other characters and numbers. And leaves out words. Particularly when I attempt to use it. In text messaging. I am using Speech-to-Text now and I am choosing not to edit out. The issues so that someone Who can change this can fix it? Very soon. I hope.

About 5 years ago, I would say it was pretty useful, Now It's become awful.. Sometimes I speak a whole paragraph into the phone and send it off without reviewing as I'm busy alot of times and I have no time to review something I can just say in person much quicker, and when I look at what I sent, it's a complete disaster, and sometimes a complete embarrassment.. Always having to send a correction text saying, please excuse the last text, google didn't translate anything right.. I speak into the phone loud and clear too.. If you need to type a whole paragraph, I suggest either typing it out, or looking over and correcting all the words that are incorrect, at that point it's more trouble than it's worth.. It's only good for a brief few words, like "I'm Here", or I'm 5 mins late", etc..

If i could put a zero I would. I'm having the same trouble as everybody else. It'll say it's updating, looking for network. Tried to cancel it but it wouldn't stop. I'm also connected to wifi and have mobile data. Can't make it stop. Uninstalled and reinstalled. No help. I would really like to use the service if it would work. WHAT TO DO??? WHEN THEY GOING TO FIX IT????? SO FRUSTRATED!

I've Uninstalled it half a dozen times. It just shows up the next day and does the forever down load. It also wants me to enter my password for a hidden folder. Not sure how that's relevant. Maybe if we all give it 1 star, the developer will fix the constant down load issue. I give up, but there's my one star. Want a higher rating? Fix the issue every one seems to be having.

Just like many others have stated, there was a hang up in updating the app. It said it was waiting for a connection despite the phone being connected to both wifi and mobile data. After a couple of weeks dealing with an annoying notification, I just Uninstalled the app and reinstalled it. It apparently worked, but should not have been necessary. Google please debug your updates BEFORE sending them out. Thank you.

Not perfect, but very good. I use this to read books and articles to me while driving or cleaning that I download thru Google Books. It's not as nuanced as an Audio Book, but it's very well done considering it's just a program. If I get tired of one voice, it's easy to switch to another. Crazy how many reviews think this is Speech-to-Text, tho.

It will quite often type out what I said, and change it right away or change it later on as I continue to verbalize the rest of my message. It's quite frustrating that it doesn't work without internet. Especially since my new phone does not come with a built in speech to text. LG Stylo 6. Seems to be completely dependent on Google apps. Please Google make this app more user-friendly. 1 * because the focus seems to be on data collection and not functionality. 👎

I had the same problem with it constantly downloading. I had to go into the app itself and do a 'forced stop'. I made sure my Wi-Fi was connected because it seems this app won't update through a data connection. I restarted my phone and the update seem to start automatically and it got stuck again so I repeated the same process and that seemed to work. I'm not recommending this, I'm just telling you what I did. My opinion is this is a unnecessary workaround not something we should have to do.

Better Annunciation than the previous version. Very difficult to get the male voice set and to make it stay. The new update causes the same text to be read over and over again until you dismiss the app that's using it entirely. It will immediately start reading the same thing over and there really isn't any way to stop it even when you hit pause or try to turn it off it just keeps going until you backout of everything and find the app and swipe it out of recents.

Sometime ago this app replaced the one I was using for speech to text and I haven't been able to change it back. It does not work well at all and it is hard to use. As I write this review, it keeps shutting itself off. It's autocorrect errors are ludicrous. And I am having the same problem as all the other reviewers with the update that won't happen and can't be cancelled. I need speech to text and I can't use my phone without it, but this app sucks.
