Description of NetGuard - no-root firewall

NetGuard is an internet security app, which offers simple and advanced ways to restrict apps' access to the internet.

Applications and addresses can individually be allowed or denied access to your Wi-Fi and/or mobile connection. Root permissions are not required.

Blocking access to the internet can help:

NetGuard uses the Android VPNService to route traffic to itself, so it can be filtered on-device instead of on a server. Only one app can use this service at the same time, which is a limitation of Android.

It would be nice to have a upload restrictor to keep people from uploading information off of a device knowing that outgoing signals are just a request and really quite small measured in bytes rather than kilo bytes or Mega bytes.

I've been using this app for about four years. The app appears to be effective in letting the user control what other phone apps try to connect to the internet without your permissions.

This app is a lifesaver. I was losing so much mobile data into thin air, even after turning it off, and disabling every conceivable thing I could think of in settings. This app seems to do what the Android system couldn't, and totally stops the phantom background data from being used. Thank you.

I have been a user of netguard for years now, and in my opinion, it's the best one out there. The features and settings cover all that I am looking for in a firewall. I love it so much that I have chosen to support its development on a regular basis.

The last update has Disabled the App, because Everything Must be Optimized. What's worse is your own instructions fail to Allow the confirmation inside the App itself, last 2 minutes then Disables (s22), which is impossible No Option via Mobile App? Does that logic make since, not to me. Have you any idea how stupid your support link really is? It doesn't provide Any Support after hours of reading, nothing about this you really Hate users. Done testing, Uninstalled your move.

Google wants to remove this perfect app on the grounds of a false accusation made by them. I guess it's working too good. Privacy isn't Google's cup of tea as we all know. Big mistake. I hope they will reconsider. Works flawlessly for me. I hope it can continue to be updated. If not, I wouldn't mind non-intrusive ads. ->New update. Remains flawless. My fav app. 👍

Great app for blocking the access to the internet of any app in the phone, including preinstalled ones. This means less battery drain and data traffic and of course the most important, installing free(trial) apps and not getting those annoying Ads 😁 Thank you.

Prior to compliance update & in block mode, old 'allowed' green IP addresses will naturally go through and be brought up to the top of the access attempts list for any app. Now, the IP will not be brought up to the top and instead you get a green lit domain name without the 'allow' mark. At this point, if you reset the domain name to gray, block mode will still allow it due to the old allowed IP address (not visible in long list) & this IP will not be brought up to the top of access attempts.

Using for years, no issues. Until this past week. Not getting any data thru wifi on a lot of apps (but not all.) and finally figured out if I turn Netguard off and back on, I can use apps again for a few hours. Usually happens twice a day.

My Netguard started malfunctioning this week. I will have a strong WiFi connection but everything will get blocked as though routed to data. Turning Netguard off and immediately back on fixes the problem. Otherwise though, it has been great over the years. I have a plan with no data.

Used it for years. Then I had to use a vpn, which is a bit of a nightmare - because Android limits to a single vpn (not a limitation by the app). At some point I apparently configured too strict rules: Samsung's update of Android didn't work anymore. I found that one difficult to repair (didn't contact support). So, powerful app, you can do a lot. But be careful, you can do too much as well. ;-)

Needs advanced vs easy mode. Bigger feedback/icons on the latter. No trial so I cant check logs to see if it's working. Each toggle reps a scenario that's reflected in the little icon. I think a chart would really help. I really want to like this and purchase all the features, but the controls are just too complicated to be functional. It's just not clear and a more user friendly interface or more intuitive design would help.

Best app on the market. I used NoRoot Firewall for years, but this app is better supported, much more powerfull and well documented. I almost gave up on the app at first because various caveats were difficult to catch. For instance, that "Block conns without VPN" must be disabled, or that notifications of blocked connections happen once. Better in-app explanations would make more new users to stay. Feature request: a tab with all blocked apps to quickly decide whether allow connections or not.

Ignore all bad reviews.. 100% of them are user error or fundamental misunderstanding of how the app works. Why are they even allowed to review? Turn on advanced features, blacklist all connections services included, and enable select few as necessary. Everything still works without my data being exfiltrated constantly and the battery life has significantly improved.

NetGuard provides functionality that frankly should be built into the Android OS. It lets you control (block) apps from using your mobile data when you're not on WiFi. The biggest challenge is sometimes figuring what needs to be unblocked when trying to allow an app to use mobile data. For example many apps need Google Play Services to be unblocked as well, but that's not obvious. There are also things like Carrier Services needed for phone and/or SMS text messages.

Have used this for 6 yrs or so. Rock solid, does what no other firewall that I've tried, and I've tried many, does and does it well. It's frequently updated, easy to set up, gets it done! NoRoot, with the flaming wall Icon, was on my phone for a couple of years, good but nowhere as powerful, but it might be a good starter. Thanks Marcel!
