Description of Garmin ActiveCaptain®

The free ActiveCaptain app creates a powerful connection between your compatible mobile device and Garmin chartplotter, charts, maps and the boating community. Whether you use your Garmin products for cruising, fishing, sailing or diving, this all-in-one app will help you enjoy your time on the water.

Just pair the app with your compatible chartplotter to wirelessly transfer and access charts and maps, software updates, routes, waypoints and helpful feedback from the ActiveCaptain Community. And, with the purchase of the OnDeck™ hub(1), you can track and monitor your boat from virtually anywhere.

Please note that this app is intended for Garmin chartplotter owners and is not recommended for use as a stand-alone navigational app.

I like it. The map subscription is pretty spendy, so I will go without, my boat sits on one lake, individual lake downloads, with no subscription would be nice, the community maps will have to be enough I guess. For anyone having trouble connecting through the app, connect via your network settings, works fine, many apps have this same issue.

I am a recreational boater and allegedly part-time fisherman. As one might expect I have slept very little since recieving my facinating high-tech chartplotter/fish finder. Without question the ActiveCaptian feacture and accompanying app greatly adds to it's "gee whiz" factor. I have already utilized the extrodinary accuracy to navigate (with the additional aid of a quality thermal scope) thru complete socked-in conditions on a large empoundment.

App doesn't sync right on Android 10. Will work fine on fresh Install, but after you reboot your phone, active captain will not recognize your active captain and card, and there for not sync active captain details, maps, system updates. Garmin's answer, "the app doesn't work right on Android 10. We will update the app eventually". That was months ago, with still no update. 🖕🏽🤬🖕🏽

The wifi feature is useful for updating maps and software but the Bluetooth won't pair with my Android phone. I'm unable to use the smart notifications. Edit: The latest update corrected the connectivity issue. Now I can use the app as intended.

Constant headache! Directions are a bare minimum. Even if you follow them perfectly the app will not work with your chartplotter. After 2 days I got everything to work except the most important thing. Downloading charts. The Active captain app will download the charts I paid for, but when I try to transfer them to my chartplotter, the chartplotter freezes at 22% download every time. It gives me a "OneChart Error" code. The app works great on my phone. Useless on my Garmin Echomap 73.

This app is exceptionally well put together. It makes it unbelievably easy to update the software on my sonar, and it also makes it super easy to consolidate my waypoints/charts on my sonar to my phone. I have other sonar that have equivalent apps that attempt to do the same thing but fall short. Shout out to Garmin for making it so easy.

Doesn't fully work on a Samsung s23 ultra. No response from Garmin after reporting the issues.

Impossible to use. Maybe being a software developer put me at a disadvantage but trying to connect to my chartplotter is incredibly frustrating. I can connect to the plotters WiFi fine but it says there are no compatible devices. The really need to do some basic usability testing.

Does not function on budget phones, although you can still download the app for them. Once registered to a device, that user becomes the owner even if it's not functioning correctly, essentially stopping any further progress setting up your device. For an app that is difficult for somebody with limited tech experience to setup you need a 24/7 customer service phone line.

too many steps to upgrade. first connect gps to plotter, the connect again and again it keeps trying to connect to strongest signal around then downloads plotter update takes 30 min. then reconnect and updates, takes 20 minutes. then reconnects to house wifi. can't keep it connected to plotter. 6 tries and tells you all updated. on a lil message. but wants to reconnect again but no internet. never tells you its done. took 3 hrs. you can download updates thru pc in 15 min. Do it! s

worked perfectly 3 months ago now do not have access to charts. A reinstall resulted in failure to register charts. Endless loop of register..ok done..register..ok done. Where are my charts? same with active captain info. 80%...98% download complete and restarts..the never completing download loop. If isnt fixed will upgrade to a different plotter

Total dud. App freezes. Doesnt update maps. When trying to uodate unit with app it says to insert sd card. Thought that was the point of the app? Anyway i insert it and still says to insert. Bought the echomap 9 on sale over thxgiving weekend. Already installed it but am taking it off and returning it this weekend. The preloaded lakevue maps are garbage. Ill pay a few $ more for a lowrance. The email support group was responsive but no help. Its not a troubleshoot issue its inferior software.

It wont download map tiles on my android, it has been that way since I upgraded to G3 mapping. it worked great before that. I gave it a 2 because it did work before the upgrade and I liked it. I have spent about 5 hours on the phone and it's still not fixed and no estimated date of a fix. The techs on the phone seem to genuinely want to help but cant. uodate: my active captain now works as it should! I'd give it a 4 now. thanks Garmin.

App suddenly stopped working the first time I got on the water. I've uninstalled/reinstalled on my Samsung Galaxy S10 and the app still just freezes on the title graphic screen without any operability whatsoever. I'm deeply disappointed since ActiveCaptain was half the reason I purchased a $700 Garmin fishfinder

Horrendous. Won't connect to any wifi we have, clunky and as intuitive as a brick. Utter waste of time downloading or spending hours trying to get the damn thing to respond. Now deleted. Memory Map is far better !

Worked well until I had to change get a new phone. It wouldn't give me any charts after that, even after purchasing another chart update (via the damn app) that I didnt need. Edit: User error was the fault here, I needed to download a chart directly via the app and then it synced with the chart I own. Works great again.

Absolutely terrible. You buy the entire carribean charts but then have to download them one by one. That's if you can download them. I've spent two months on and off trying. I've got a few of the charts, then the app either hangs while downloading or the app doesn't respond. I check I every few days to try again. Sometimes I manage to get a little piece of what I paid for, about 30% so far Luckily selling this boat soon. I'll never use this ever again. I have about 40 emails to garmin support.
