Description of Live Transcribe & Notification

Live Transcribe & Sound Notifications makes everyday conversations and surrounding sounds more accessible among people who are deaf and hard of hearing, using just your Android phone or tablet.

On most devices, you can directly access Live Transcribe & Sound Notifications with these steps:
1. Open your device's Settings app.
2. Tap Accessibility, then tap Live Transcribe, or Sound Notifications, depending on which app you’d like to start.
3. Use the Accessibility button, gesture or quick setting (https://support.google.com/accessibility/android/answer/7650693) to start Live Transcribe or Sound Notifications.

Sound Notifications:
• Get notified of potential risky situations and personal situations based on sounds happening at home (for example, smoke alarm, siren, baby sounds).
• Add custom sounds to get notified when your appliances beep.• Get notifications with a flashing light or vibration to your mobile device or wearable.
• Timeline view lets you go back in history (currently limited to 12 hours) to see what was happening around you.

Real-time transcription:
• Transcribes in real-time. Text appears on your device as words are spoken.
• Choose from over 80 languages and dialects, and quickly switch between two languages.
• Add custom words that you use frequently, like names or household items.
• Set your device to vibrate when someone says your name.
• Type responses in your conversation. Bring up your device’s keyboard and type your words for a continuous dialogue. Transcriptions still appear while you type.
• See the volume of the speaker’s voice compared to the loudness in your environment. You can use this sound indicator to adjust your volume when you speak.
• Use external microphones found in wired headsets, Bluetooth headsets, and USB mics for better audio reception.

Referring back to transcription:
• Choose to save transcriptions for 3 days. Saved transcriptions will stay locally on your device for 3 days, so you can copy and paste them elsewhere. (By default, transcriptions are not saved.)
• Search within saved transcriptions.
• Touch and hold text in transcription to copy and paste.

Requirements:
• Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and up.

An excellent alternative for the deaf and hearing impaired! I have this running all the time and even use it while I watch TV. Ideas for improvement: 1. Increase or controllable sensitivity. 2. Could also aid as a translation tool. 3. Help with telephone conversations. 4. Add cut/copy and paste ability. Thank you very much! Best regards,
Gail Valence
Live transcribe fairly accurately transcribes speech IF you are really close to source. It does not pick up across a room like other apps do. It doesn't differentiate between speakers. They really need to make it more sensitive. I've noticed, with everyone wearing masks, often no words are picked up. Additionally it often won't start unless i turn off phone and turn back on.

I really like this app when it works. I had to close the app to get it work again. I have noticed it happens more often than usual. Also, the software on my phone got updated couple days ago, and the icon of microphone for live transcribe on the bottom was disappeared. I was little disappointed about that. I really like this feature. This app still needs a lot of work to improve. I hope I will see the new revisions really soon.

Great app. I have a relative that has a significant hearing loss but decent speech ability. She uses the app for phone calls. Most anything she misses in the call she can read on the app. One suggestion I have for the app developers would be to color code individual speakers. This might be difficult for in-person uses of the app, but phone conversations i would think might be possible. Other than that, a terrific app.

I'm deaf, and this app has become immeasurably important to me with the current Covid19 situation. I rely on lipreading as my main mode of communication, and masks make that impossible. The app installs easily and the speed it translates speech is almost instant. I love that it has options for text size and saving the transcriptions as well as various other options. Thank you so much for making this app available, you have made my life so much easier!

As I have a fair amount of hearing loss & constant Tinnitus, I was hoping this app might fill the gap. Unfortunately, it works in situations where I don’t need it and often doesn’t work when I do need it. For example, if there’s background crowd noise, it will pop up ‘crowd noise’ even though I can still make out most of the words of the person talking.

This app does a pretty good job of transcribing conversations. The biggest drawback I find with it is the inability to send the notes via email. It's very clunky for me to scroll to the top of the conversation copy it and then paste it into another application. Which is the opposite of what Google tries to do with seamless integration. Also the conversations get broken up into segments so I have to scroll to the top of each segment select the translation copy it go to my Gmail paste it etc

I don't know if it's my phone, but the app will suddenly stop transcribing or have the digital version of a brain fart and get bits and pieces of the conversation out. Sometimes I'll have to close and open the app back up just to get it working again. Also doesn't always pick up the voice even if that person is speaking loudly enough. I rely on this app more and more now with my hearing having gotten worse and my ability to lipread stripped because everyone is wearing masks now.

I'm deaf in one ear and have really bad tinnitus in both ears, so this app really does help a lot in the classrooms during lectures when I can't understand what's being said. However, the translations seem to be right 80% of the time, where just a few words are mistranslated or not being picked up. Overall still a good app, just wish it was better at that and picking up speech in noisy environments. :)

Has no features to edit, punctuate, erase, share - nothing. Just records words. If you pause, the next word will go beneath the last, otherwise it will go next to the last word. That's the extent of what I could find you can control in the transcription itself. Also, there's no info. Maybe because there's nothing to teach. But no help page, FAQ, or demo. I think it's a good idea in theory but it's hardly usable for real life. It is pretty accurate for getting spoken words correct though.

I like within limits, for its quickness and accuracy. But it seems to be for short bursts, not for transcribing a longer conversation / meeting. It goes for a couple minutes, then stops. If I'm missing something relative to that, please inform. And yes, I'd like to be able to grab some or all of the text and use it elsewhere. Help: I am looking for an app to transcribe and keep an INCOMING PHONE CONVERSATION on mobile. Got one, it screwed up things and trial was only 3 days before expense.

This app gets about 80% of the conversation right -- less if the conversation is highly technical and the Google dictionary can't find the technical words. On the other hand, the app could serve as a good helper for any hearing impaired person who can almost, but not quite, follow the conversation. A feature/bug is that the app is either on or off -- there's no way to suspend it while there are outside interruptions you don't want to transcribe.

Works *okay* but not great as a transcription app for the purpose of recording a podcast / conversation. I had to slow down the podcast to 0.6-0.7x speed in order to make the transcribing as accurate as possible. Accuracy is decent for the purpose of skimming through & deciphering topics and points discussed but subpar if interpreting information from the transcription. That said, it is still a time-saver if you are looking to present a transcription to a third party. Would require going back & listening at parts as well as lots of editing time but would probably be faster than just transcribing from scratch for most users. You can select all & copy however, tapping "select all" only selects text up to the last break point which happens a few times during a 1 hour conversation. There is no scroll bar on the right side so you have to keep scrolling with your thumb. Sometimes you hit the screen wrong and it deselects or puts you back into a different spot. Then have to re-select. This could work better as a speech transcriber though the "select all" issue above may come into play assuming there are a lot of pauses. Would love if this auto-saved to a Google Doc.

Live Transcribe is extremely helpful to those of us who cannot understand words very well when talking to people. Its accuracy is similar to YouTube and it gets lots of words wrong, and it stops and starts at times, but it's a new app under development so that's to be expected. I have found it to be very helpful in conversations and in watching videos that don't have captions. I hope they can improve its range, and I'm sure they will improve it's word comprehension.

I close caption TV shows with this. It's almost 100% accurate and it will stop when the network connection stops but it will restart and spit out several pages of captioning that it was getting from the TV show but it couldn't type it in the app without a network connection. Google even has captions for the sound coming from your phone in the volume control settings on the phone. And Google is at least 95% accurate minimum. You can use it for conversations without the other person knowing.

I am late-deafened. This app helps me communicate with people, friends, doctors, etc., tremendously wherever I go. The dentist just told me he was amazed that the app can translate accurately and immediately what he said over double masks! Although the English version is great, the Chinese one still has a lot of room for improvement. It's more difficult since there are so many homonyms in Chinese. The app needs to pick up the right words depending on context. Thanks Google!! keep working!

The transcription ability of this app is like no other. Wow, I've pushed it to the limits and it keeps up without even a sweat. There is an issue, however -- when its accessibility service is enabled (so it can be called via two-finger gesture swipe), it causes double punctuation to be added to *all* keyboard input *anywhere* throughout the device. Even when you're not using Live Transcribe. It's been driving me nuts for a week now, but I finally traced it to this app's service. 5-star if fixed!

This app is pretty well thought out - maybe too well. It's not recognizing words spoken. The way Samsung described your app was that it could be used for multiple voices in order to keep up with the conversations. If I couldn't hear, I wouldn't know your app was writing a lot of the wrong words and missing some words entirely. So, definitely needs work. It's on my phone from the manufacturer so I'll be checking back to see how well the app can improve and then upgrading your Stars above. Ty
