Description of K-9 Mail

K-9 Mail is an open source email client that works with basically every email provider.

Features

Install the app "OpenKeychain: Easy PGP" to encrypt/decrypt your emails using OpenPGP.

The warnings for discarding a message upon hitting the back button are disabled by default; drafts are not saved by default. I spent an entire morning drafting a very long email which was discarded without warning while attempting to add an attachment. I've sent messages that bounced and needed to be resent but was unable to because there is no copy of the original in the outbox; while there is an outbox in the list of folders, it doesn't save anything there until you learn the hard way.

Wonderful app until they completely broke it with version 5.8! Absolutely useless now. Instead of tapping on one of many email accounts in the account overview, I now have to tap FOUR times to get to any one inbox. I hate it when people change user interface without asking anybody if that might be useful. There is NOTHING in that latest version that is improved, but the app has become useless to me. Moving on to TypeApp or Thunderbird.

This has been the best mail app until the latest update when they mucked with the beautiful highly usable user interface. It's still functionally great. But after the latest update the account overview screen is gone, the helpful account highlight color is no longer displayed in the reading pane, and the selection check boxes are gone. I have to take away a star. Please K-9 devs if you are listening, bring back those features even if the user has to select them as options.

Finally managed to install an update. Agree with most of the critical posts. New way of switching & looking which of my emails have new message is huge step back. Move of delete etc. to the top also; must use both hands and then fingers block most of the screen. Cumbersome & slower. Gray in dark mode is to light. The only good is that selecting messages is easier, but how to select a range? Overall, one step forward, there steps back. If i would want Outlook I would get one.

I had this app for probably 8 years and kept living with its idiosyncrasies because it was "mine." The unreliable notifications of received emails was what finally did it for me. That problem existed with the older version, but with this new, vastly changed version, which now has a persistent notification you cannot remove and STILL doesn't notify you of emails reliably regardless of whether you set it to push or pull? No thanks. I moved on

I've been a very happy user of K9 for years. It's simple UI served me well with 8 different accounts from various providers all working well. This new version has ruined the app. It's very clunky to get to the individual accounts - you have to open a menu to see them, rather than simply appearing in a list when you open the app. The swipe and delete function is gone. Menu options at top are harder to reach. Sad to see a great app get ruined. Fortunately I was able to downgrade back to V5.6.

Hate the new update. Sorry but it's very frustrating to use and all my inboxes are out of order and I haven't been able to figure out how to rearrange it. Not to mention the polling is frozen more often than not now. I used to love this app. I'll change the rating if they fix the ability to order my inboxes properly. I also can't seem to get email to come in consistently anymore. I'm lucky if it updates once a day. After many years of using this app I'm now looking for another.

Horrible update. The delete option is complex and slow - used to be fast and simple. Dang app pings now when I get multiple emails (thanks for the multi-notifications /s). UI is clumsy. It dumps me into a unified inbox - didn't want that! It screwed up some of the accounts and they won't email out now. I have been using k9 since the beginning and now have to start looking for something else.

Don't like the new UI as it is now. I have multiple email accounts and can't see the summary display of all accounts anymore. Also can't find how to change notification sounds for each account...it seems to default to the System notification. I surely hope the developers can fix these issues, been using K9 for ages and don't want to start looking for a different app. Why the change? Were people unhappy with the old UI? Also cannot mark messages as 'Unread'.

It pains me to give this app a 2 star review because it's otherwise perfect, but it fails to send email replies. Sending emails is half of what the app is supposed to do. It isn't an issue with the host as has been suggested, because every other email client is able to successfully send. This app doesn't give any indication that the email hasn't sent either, so you're not aware that your important reply didn't go through. Fix this problem and I'll reinstall and give 5 stars.

The new UI is really terrible. The summary list view of all accounts was extremely nice and now requires several extra steps to make anything similar show up. The buttons at the bottom being missing now also requires too many extra steps to complete the same tasks as before. Other than having a "new look," there is nothing added by this redesign.

Latest redesign is awful. Message controls are all at the top of the screen now, so you can't easily read and manage your email with one hand. Message list doesn't get totally black now for read messages. Pressing "back" exists the app instead of dropping you to your list of accounts. Basically the entire new version is a collection of changes no one wanted and which all make the app worse.

I have used this app for many years and have generally been happy until the latest update. It is now incredibly slow to load. I also don't like the new interface but can at least see what they were trying to do there. The slow loads and buggy display have caused me to miss a number of messages. Unless they address that in a new update soon, stay away!

I've used this app for years and it's made IMAP accounts a breeze. I think most of the reviews on here are due to Android stopping the app from working properly, or using services that don't work properly. By turning off the battery optimization for this app, and using a proper server that supports IMAP IDLE connections, I receive a notification instantly. Hosting your own email is getting harder and harder these days. This app is extremely helpful. I hope the developer stays motivated.

New update removes the main thing that set this app apart, the accounts overview screen. It now takes two clicks to get to the same info I used to get upon opening the app. Tapping around trying to find where things are now somehow resulted in an "all-accounts" download, which is something I never want. From the permissions it's demanding, push has somehow been turned on somewhere. At this point, it will be as much work to make this usable as to switch to another app.

Used this app for years. Now, though, I get constant notices saying that k-9 mail is over-using the battery. Most recently it used 8% of the charge in less than a half hour. So I am constantly having to restart my phone. But then it happens again an hour later. I'm here at the playstore to find another email app so I can delete K-9 Mail. Samsung S8+.

Not sure what happened, but the new version stops working periodically and completely drains the phone battery. It used to be a reliable app, but it has terrible problems now. I have a newer phone and can go for days without charging. Now I maybe get a half day. The phone told me this app was using all my resources and recommended that I close it.

A week ago would have been 5 stars. I LOVE K-9 MAIL. Have used it from my first cell. But the programmer(s) have made the same mistake I've seen in lots of apps. They seem to honor pretty over function and worse they break what doesn't need fixing. Please bring back ability to not have a unified mailbox. I have no need for it and much prefer the old lists of accts as an opening screen. At the very least, give us the option as opposed to cramming what we don't want down our throats.
