This app breaks like it's its job. I've probably had to uninstall and reinstall it [only thing that's fixed it] when the app stops play sound. I've had to do that dozens of times over the last four years. Now the uninstall/reinstall isn't even working. What happened? It's been months since I've had this thing break on me, but here we go again, I guess. Every time this happens, the NPR One app is still running, but I don't like the format of that app nearly as much for the news programs.

I love the coverage, and the options available through the app are better than adequit. But the tech part stinks. Runs in the background when off, using battery. Doesn't play with my car bluetooth radio, starting on it's own over and over, playing different content when restarting (get back in the car after pumping gas and expect to have to re-start yourself or it insists on segment from the past). Casch never seems to clear itself. You can do better NPR! You are a great news source and more!

I used to like this app, used it daily, then they "updated" it and I hated that update so much that I deleted the app. The old version was a list of headlines, mostly articles but the new is focused on audio- bad for those with hearing loss. I would have been okay with that if I could have personalized it to the written articles, but that didn't seem possible. But the worst was the audio automatically opened every time I used Waze and that was really annoying since I'm the driver of the carpool.

New format cancels some loved capabilities. 1. Can no longer open the app and many stories for reading during a flight. Each news story has to be opened separately while connected to internet. 2. Swipe to side to save a story or audio file for reading or listening to later. 3. There are now lots of ads, making the simple text screens busy. Probably good for NPR's bottom line. Not as clean for users. I'll still use the app, but it's less useful to me. Thanks for great news coverage.

I had been using this app for news for years, but in the last couple of updates, the audio streams would keep cutting off. For listening while in the car, this is not only irksome, but fiddling with it is possibly dangerous. Here's hoping they resolve it, because the actual content is some damn fine reporting and analysis, refreshingly devoid of spin or sensationalism. I turned to my local public radio affiliate's app for the time being, as much of the same content is available there.

Usually good, but once a week or every few days the app will start having trouble. It will play audio but then stop after a minute or two. Then I have to delete the app and download all over again to fix the problem. This has been happening to me for over a couple of years now on two different android phones. On the plus side, this app makes WAY more sense to me than the NPR One app. *I'm still having this issue in Januarh 2020.

They updated the app recently, the old app was buggy, but simple and had the functions users wanted. The update makes it like that terrible NPR one app, and removes useful functions. and there are ads now too. You can't add a whole program to a playlist (update: fixed). You can't move stories around in the playlist, which is hidden from the main page. Once a story is played, it is gone from the playlist so you can't go back. Other stories play after the playlist is finished. It's bad.

The new phone app does not what I wanted when I first got the app. Up until yesterday I could scroll quickly through a list of headlines to see if I was interested in reading the article. At the bottom of the scroll down there was a button to load more stories. Now the app seems more about listening to the radio, etc. than letting me scroll down a list of headlines. So now the phone app is more like that from the local commercial TV station and that is not an improvement. Yuk.

Ok, when needed, but it has to be open and on to listen. Can't browse, sit and pet the dogs and cat, letting the screen turn off, because it shuts off. So I only use it when I have to. Also hard to browse past shows, it loads each page, doesn't just scroll easily through, when you click a show to see what it's about, when you go back it's right to the beginning, then you have to scroll through everything again. So time consuming I gave up, I just use it to listen to missed shows now.

Frustrating and unpredictable. A significant downgrade from the previous app. The most frustrating behavior is how it plays seemingly random content when I try to listen to a specific show. In the previous app, I could queue up all the stories in today's q Morning Edition to listen to later in the day. In the new app, if I tap "listen to all" under Morning Edition, I get a couple stories from this show, followed by a random series of content from other shows. No way to view or modify the queue.

The new app is a significant downgrade. The old interface was simple, and did its job: showed me headlines, which I could then tap for the relevant article. Now we have a huge banner up top we can't get rid of, a footer that's always there even when I open an article, and ads on the main page where there used to be none. Not a fan. Overall: cluttered instead of simple. Return to simplicity, please! I've found and re-installed an older version prior to the change; hopefully it remains functional.

I'm not liking this new interface. It's cluttered, ads I don't notice because I just ignore, it's cumbersome, too busy, and now in order to read more new stories. I have to sort by topic now instead of keep scrolling like I normally would. I haven't needed to use the radio function yet for my favorite station (WBFO) but from what I'm reading from the reviews. It's almost impossible to find the station. Will be uninstalling and installing the old version. Fix this!
Joshua Waxman
It's hard to overstate how terrible this new version of the app is. It is difficult to get to the hourly headlines (and automatically cuts to local news), it is impossible to find the news stories I want to hear as opposed to the ones the app wants me to hear, and it constantly crashes and bugs. The old version allowed you to browse through the entire lineup of the day's news shows and select the stories you wanted to listen to in order. Please bring this back!

It was a great app up until the last couple of months. I listen during my commute and it cuts out about two to three times per minute making me have to go back and hit play. My connection is always great. It's so frustrating I just listen to something else. I've tried uninstalling, cleaning the cache, etc, but nothing works. I've had to restart it FOUR times just while writing this! Edit: Problem still persist and has gotten worse. Have tried to contact developers with no response. Uninstalling.
Austin Duggan
I absolutely love NPR but this app is glitchy. By far the most frustrating glitch occurs when playing a playlist. Each episode in the playlist will play till there's around a minute left, and then skip to the next episode. It happens every time. The only way to hear the remainder of the episode it is to replay it, and fast forward to the portion that was skipped. Not an ideal listening experience.
A Google user
I like NPR but this app is kinda garbage. 1. No way to remove stories from the playlist without clearing the entire thing. This is idiotic. 2. Moving stories up and down the playlist works about 10% of the time. Based on what? I've found no way to tell why. 3. Stories on the playlist overlap and cut off the intro to the next. 4. Keeps playing audio when closed. This is beyond unacceptable. It really should be better. Essentially all it is is a podcast player and story aggregator. It makes no sense that updates are so few and far between. Temps doing this work, too?

Very disappointed after last big update Much functionality has been lost and doesn't even work as well as website streaming. Redesign is ugly + not intuitive. Programmes are difficult to find. Adding entire programmes to playlist results in listening to one segment, then an announcement "you have reached the end of your playlist" then proceeds to play "Recommended" segments even if i loaded more from the programme or any of my own selections. i want to override recommendations but cannot.
Charles Waits
NPR updated the app and changed the whole layout and functionality of the app. Now, very few article are handled through the app itself and instead push you through the internet to the article online. It's not helpful and consistently has issues loading articles less than 24 hours old. NPR is attempting to link podcasts through its app as well and they're quite annoying as the app will randomly play and cutoff other media I'm listening to. The app is really a failing to the news worthy articles.
