I love economist, and I have an annual subscription to it. But the app is really bad. It takes good 10 seconds after it starts to get audio ready to be played. Downloading weekly edition takes about a dozen tries to complete as it constantly errors out. On top of it, if you switch Bluetooth connection while playing audio the app crashes. If you pause the app to check on something for 10 seconds, the app dies. It is very aggravating all in all. And I have last year flagship phone

This app is an exercise in frustration. It reacts extremely slowly overall. If the phone attempts to multitask (e.g., take an incoming call, read a text message), the app will need to reboot to get back to where you were. Which is a ridiculously long process. Sometimes when listening to the full magazine audio, it will pause between articles for ten to thirty seconds. Almost as if it is buffering the next article, even though you downloaded the whole issue. Get it together, Economist!
Jeffrey Brown
I use it for the audio edition. It's almost unuseable. The buttons can take literally ten seconds to respond to commands, and often they simply don't respond. When they do respond it's sometimes to the last five presses you made, causing unpredictable resulta. Trying to skip around in the audio is basically impossible. It gets stuck for no reason, stops playing, shows a spinning blue circle that makes you think something is about to happen but it never does. The earlier version was better.

Very buggy. Today, for instance, the audio feature kept failing. Whenever I hit the "go back 15 seconds" button, the screen filled with an image from an entirely different story, blocking access to the audio control screen. Another bug: the app does not work with my phone's lock screen. When audio is playing, I can pause playback on the lock screen, but I can't rewind or fast forward. If I hit the buttons for that, the app instead, respectively, jumps backward to start audio for a prior article or jumps ahead to start audio for the next article. Quite frustrating.

The downloading process of each issue is absolutely terrible. It should be automatic. It is not. The pictures within each story are downloaded only if you are connected while reading. Too bad if you are on the go. In addition opening the app is soooo slow. This obviously is unrelated to the content which is as great as usual. Edited after 2 months. download and storage of this application is really terrible. No way to store editions on a SD card. Edition size is huge. 4gB+ on internal storage.

I have been an Economist subscriber for years. Now I read everything on line rather than the paper issues. I really like the audio edituons. I was able to make a play list of articles from different issues with the old App. I would listen to the articles while exercising or driving. Now I can't do that. But I download the audio edition and unzip selected articles MP3 files to a folder to play using the PowerAmp app.

Exceptional newspaper with great reporting and analysis. App is not great. Very slow, difficult to use offline, and lots of bugs. Can no longer use on my tablet because it throws an error every few seconds. I have never been able to download an issue on the first try. I have been reading this newspaper for 15 years and I might have to go back to print at this point.

I halve been a subscriber for the past ten years. In the new app, it is quit difficult to select audio contents. In the previous version, I was able to select a section of the magazine like "science section" and listen to the entire section This option is not available anymore. So, I still use the old version when I want to listen to a group of articles. They need to fix this issue.

Makes me want to cancel my subscription. It doesn't connect to cars or headphones well, so if you try and fast forward or rewind through parts of an article, it just skips to a totally new article. So to use it, you have to keep your phone open and in your hand at all times. The lag time between telling it to fast forward and rewind is so bad that you can't even get to a point you want because you hit the button, think it didn't read it, hit it again amd just as you do, it then does the first.

This updated app is absolutely horrible. The older app, while not perfect, was tremendously better. Because of this app, my daily use of the Economist is now down to 2 days/week, if that. It’s just too frustrating to deal with the app. Here are a few reasons why: 1. Navigating to the queue is tortuous. It takes at least 3 different actions just to pause the audio. Previously, this was 1-click away. 2. To go from an article currently playing to the next article requires at least 4 actions. The last app could do this in 1 action. 3. The auto play function is temperamental. You never know if or when it will work. Often, it continuously replays the article just played instead of advancing to the next article. 4. The amount of glitches is shocking. I will stop the app to do something else. When I return, my place in the article is gone. Many times, the app starts me all over at the beginning of the queue! 5. The font indicating the duration of an article is microscopic. For sanity’s sake, give us back the old app!

Like the design of the app but the audio just doesn't work well. I downloaded the app on 6/4/2021. I was able to listen to 2 audios on wifi but then on the 3rd one I paused and it just wouldn't start again after that. Tried restarting the app but didn't work. I was pretty delighted to have the audio option but I guess it just doesn't work very well. Based on other reviews I guess it's more like a recent issue and there has been an attempted fix? The fix might not work as expected. Just FYI.

If you close the app in the middle of reading an article and reopen it later, it does not remember the location where you left off and you have to start looking for it from scratch. That should be the main feature in a reader app, in my opinion. Also having to scroll the article text as opposed to flipping pages (e.g. similar to Kindle) is very inconvenient. This ruins the whole experience for me.
Gary Delp
I can no longer recommend the app. The content remains excellent as a source of news and in-depth analysis. Editorial are clearly marked, another reason that I trust the information presented; I know what size and shape of salt with which to apply to the information. The I am so disappointed in the new version of the app. On my tablet the only choice is a portrait view, and the right side of the page is clipped. If I want to read a story, I have to adjust the font size up and down to alternate the paragraph wrapping in order to see most of the words. This gets old very quickly. I shared this using the app feedback and, in a survey, including my email address; the app did not change and I received no response. Again, the data is great, the app is broken badly.
Stewart Wills
The app, always poor, now fails completely. Full-issue downloads are glacially slow; even worse, the app fails before downloading the entire issue -- after a long period waiting for the download to finish, we get an error and an information-free "something went wrong" pop-up. Unlike many here, I do not *want* to download the audio, but only text and images to read offline. The previous release at least gave you the option of not downloading the audio but only text; the new version does not.
Neil Abrahams
You can browse, download, and stream editions. It has a good search engine. It remembers what you've listened to or read, it's updated daily, and if you're in audio mode it'll play the next article without your having to intervene. It loads fairly quickly. Crashes are rare non-existent for me. Aside from a browser app it's probably my favorite one. Only thing I do not care for is that the Android version does not rotate screen when that would be helpful.

I love the Economist. I hate this broken app. The "legacy" app was perfect until the Economist kneecapped it by making me log in every time I opened it. Here are the bugs that make it unusable. 1. As I'm scrolling down the page, suddenly an entire paragraph gets selected for copying. That pushes the entire window down from where I was reading. I have to tap again to unselect, then scroll up to find my place. This happens 1 or 2 times per article. 2. If I hover my finger too long over the screen (like more than a second), it turns on a block of magnification. This leaves a block of text about the size of a word in the middle of screen. There is no way to undo this other than closing the app and starting over. It looks like the app is turning on accessibility features that I have turned off. This happens on none of my other 100 apps including the Economist Legacy app, so it appears to be bugs in this app rather than a phone (google pixel) problem. App has been uninstalled, reinstalled, cache cleared, etc. multiple times with no improvement. Beyond that, I find the navigation annoying and far less user friendly than the legacy app. Maybe I'm old school, but I like reading the pub from leaders to obit. There is no way to keep my place and start again from where I was. Each time I open the app, I have to navigate to the weekly edition, then scroll through the articles to find where I left off. The legacy app would automatically open to the last article I read and that was far better. Please fix this app. I love The Economist. I really want to read it.
Nathan Wnuk
The only reason I pay for a subscription is for the audio content. This 'new' app is awful, harder to navigate, and does not keep track of where in the stream you are. After listening for a while if you stop the app will default to picking up where you PREVIOUSLY started. You have to navigate through the clunky interface to try to find where you actually left off. It is more functional to download the archive files on a computer, transfer to your phone and play in a diff app. Pathetic.
Luthasture (Luthasture)
This app has good articles and is well organized. The downside is that parts of the app are not well optimized. You can't pause the reading, trying to rewind has extreme latency, and trying to switch from one article to the next causes an error and continues to paly the same one. Tried listening for a couple of hours and have only gotten frustrated with it.
