Hangouts was much more intuitive, and user friendly. All the great functionalities that Hangouts had are gone. Can't assign specific ringtones to individual people/chats. Group messages are in a different tab that makes it confusing when opening the app. The chat interface is ugly and hard to read. One picture upload at a time. The only positive is the search history function for your chats. It's very helpful.

Google Chat is the worst. I can't place my settings to see links in a web browser, I can't see all images in a chat and when I click on it the image is super huge and I can't adjust the size, I can't place more than one image or attachment at a time, I can't video call without creating a "team" or whatever that is. Please quit trying to be like Microsoft Teams or Zoom. It's just so many steps backwards from Hangouts. Bring Hangouts back!

I used hangouts for years. It was simple, easy, and did its function. This app is slow and constantly refreshing, the screen is cluttered with annoying features, and the notifications are spotty at best and non-existent at worst, not to mention the symbol is so close to my regular texts I have to take a moment to differentiate. I don't understand the need to fix what isn't broken, and being forced off of Hangouts for this glossy, shallow app is abysmal.

I liked this format better for messaging, but I really don't like the new video call feature. I want to be able to easily just call with a button, not schedule a meeting like zoom or something. I also had a really weird bug where messages were being repeated in the chat, from both sides. None of these messages appeared in hangouts. I'm forced to switch apps, as this bug makes communication really difficult.

Bad experience. Not ready for real use. This is the app that Google wants us to use instead of Hangouts? It's bland, confusingly laid out and very buggy. For starters, it's impossible to share multiple photos without posting them one at a time, it's needlessly convoluted to video call, and it sets off multiple notification tones when a new message is received. I like Google products for the most part, but this is a disappointing, anti-user mess. Make it better or ring back hangouts.

Agree with the others. Terrible app and features. Hangout worked better. I'm very tech savvy and notifications will not work. At all. It's also absurd that you can't select more than one photo to send at a time. It only allows you to select one and send each one individually. That takes way too much time and is really silly.

This exceeds "unintuitive" and literally hides settings. I thought you couldn't mute group chats because there's no option for it in the menu for the group chat that you get to by tapping the 3 dots. Turns out that's a fake menu. The real menu is accessed by tapping the name of the "room" while you're in it. I would've figured that out a lot sooner if there wasn't a fake menu. Even better idea: USE THE 3 DOTS MENU THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS. Better than Hangouts in some other ways, but not all.

Inferior in nearly every way to Hangouts. I can't figure out why some of my group chats are under "chats" and some are in "spaces," and am consequently always looking in the wrong one. The app also can't navigate to a Space from a push notification if the last thing you were reading was a Chat, and vice versa. Left-aligning everyone's text in a white background makes it very difficult to scan through conversations. The only improvement is that it seems to compress photos now for quicker sending.

Not the worst so far, but not good either. I preferred the old hangout style where my replies were 'bubbled' to one side and the others were separated. I also don't see any way to customize the layout, which would make this easier to use. I feel that the current set up is not great for folks with eye issues, partial blindness, color blindness, or other optical problems. Perhaps more research into these types of settings is needed by the developers. Will update again later.

This app sucks compared to the previous Hangouts version. You can only send one picture at a time and you can not download pictures directly from the app. You have to send it through your email first. I also do not like that you have to send a link for video chat unlike hangout where you can just video chat with a click of a button. This app makes communication more difficult. We are looking for an alternative now. We miss hangouts. 😢

Nightmare. Why force us to use this instead of hangouts? As if we've time traveled to the 90s. Can't send more than one photo at a time. Then opening an image is like opening a super slow loading webpage in the browser. Hangouts was the perfect mix of instant messaging and text. Chat makes me want to throw my phone into a lake and start sending letters instead.

Not very functional. Images cannot be copied and pasted in later conversations. When I engage in a conversation only the very last message from the person I am texting displays. All others disappear. But my own messages remain as I have history turned on. The other person is pinned as they are the only person I text with. Needs more work before replacing hangouts. I do not want the app to access my calendar or contacts.

Not a good replacement for Hangouts. If it were a near 1:1 experience, it would be fine, but now everyone's messages are on one side, you can't view pictures that well (thumbnail inadequate, selecting picture opens browser window). Poorly fleshed out, frankly. Microsoft Teams may not be great, but holy cow can they really take it to the users and get feedback. They know what to do. Google doesn't care. Time to find a new chat client.

I have never written a review for an app, that I can recall. This app is a worse version of what it replaced. It's honestly like they took a step back in time. Features missing that the old app had are gone (video calls now routed through another app is a waste of time), no more archiving of chats that you can easily retrieve if needed, no more ability to see when a user saw your message (just that they have or haven't), etc. This app was a solution looking for a problem. Poor decision, Google.

So, this is a step backwards. I don't necessarily hate the new interface, but finding options and settings doesn't feel as intuitive as Hangouts, and it appears some are missing. What's really frustrating though is the connectivity issues, a lot of messages (especially pictures) just get stuck on sending and fail frequently - both on WiFi and cellular.

I wish I could give it 0 stars. I don't understand why they wanted to change chats into a commercial like app. It's a wannabe Microsoft teams. I don't want to use a platform like that outside of work. Getting rid of the chat bubbles makes reading chats difficult. "history is on" displayed in the type field is very distracting. The stickers are gone. I am livid about this change. There are also no options for customization other than the background color. Thanks for ruining a good thing.

Hangouts was better. This chat feature really sucks. The way you send photos sucks. You can only send one at a time. And you can't click on a photo and scroll through what you've already sent. You have to keep scrolling up forever to find it in chat. Not to mention now the text us all on the same side which makes it confusing to figure out who typed what. And your messages muddle together. So when you send 2 messages it looks like one. This app sucks. I would not recommend.

Forced to use this because they blocked hangouts from working. It's worse. You can only attach one image at a time. It seems to struggle with sending/playing videos, but succeeds eventually. It splits chats between groups and individuals in different tabs for added time/clicks to access. There are probably other things, but the above is enough. It is simply worse than the app I am being forced to replace.
