Description of HSL - tickets & route planner

With the HSL app you can buy tickets for Helsinki region public transport, find the best routes and get targeted traffic information. In the HSL app you will find e.g. single, day and season tickets for both adults and children. Bus, train, metro, tram and ferry – all with the same app. You can pay easily e.g. with a payment card.

In addition to tickets, there is also a journey planner in the HSL app. Journey planner tells you e.g. the best route and the ticket, which is needed for the route. In the HSL app, you can also see up-to-date transport information for the areas and lines you have selected.

Minus 2 points for removing the possibility to buy train tickets online just to force me to install this app. Buying tickets online is much more convenient for me for specific reasons. Minus 2 points for requiring a Finnish phone number.

Why can't I buy 2*single tickets? For a tourist it's pretty stupid that each person of the group has to buy their own travel sim cards and each to install the app just to get one ticket from airport to center. Just add a selection for how many tickets can be bought at the same time.

Useless app - no Google wallet support. Have to install some weird local pay apps or add card details through browser.

Have never been able to buy a ticket because the mobile phone validation mechanism doesn't work for me. The workaround is to go anonymous, but why not just fix the app?

Need to sign in, but doesn't let you make a account (email already in use, but if you go to forgot password then email is wrong)

Not turist friendly, since I live in sweden i have a swedish number, can't pay with a credit or debit card on the app, and you need a Finnish number to get confirmation, i didn't want to start looking for a machine or place were they sell tickets when you are in a hurry, ended up using uber instead.

TOP TIP: If you're stuck, because you've not received your SMS verification. Pick up a cheap Finnish SIM and use it to verify your account. I picked up a DNA SIM for 4,90 € from an R-kioski, just put it in my phone to receive an SMS. Ridiculous that this issue hasn't been resolved.

The routes is a lottery, some days it work some days it's stuck in loading for several minutes, if you are in a rush is better to use Google maps to check the routes and buses coming. Please fix this soon as it's been months already like this.

For domestic users: Works great. Convenient. For international visitors: sending activation code fails for international phones visiting the country. No network connection or connection to HSL's service.

The SMS backend is broken it seems, so I can't make an account. I have both US (Verizon) and Singapore (Singtel) SIM cards + a US IP line -- none of them get a confirmation code. And as such, that locks me out of using pretty much any function of the app (even logging out?). The app (and website) just give generic errors saying to try again. I see that a recent review received a suggestion to reinstall the app and use it anonymously, but every time I try to by a ticket it asks me to log in...

As a foreign visitor I can't use this app. Unable to register or buy a ticket using a non-finnish phone number. UPDATE: workaround ID deletion can't complete in app as I can't use the offered ID verification services - I'm not Finnish. Can't contact via hsl.fi as it is 403 forbidden from UK. Workaround - buy w/o login with a new email and phone # - no good as foreign payment card not accepted. Looks like I'll be walking.

I have been using the for the past 1.5 years and I did not face any major issues. The bus station code which starts with H is really good as you don't wait in the opposite direction bus stop. I prefer HSL app compared to google maps.

Still doesn't work with US cell phones. Showed it to HSL employee and he shrugged. How long does this take to fix if one is actually interested in fixing it? Update: Thanks for the quick response. I have not been able to purchase tickets without login and number verification and most help pages for hsl.fi show 403 Forbidden message when opened from phone. This is how I made it work: Delete and reinstall. Use a different email and cell number, BUT do not use a password or create account.

Doesn't work ! It does not send a verification text to create an account rendering it useless. Tried it on 2 completely different phones. if you try to select any option in the app like Customer Support or Feedback, you get a 403 Forbidden holding page. Help HSL I am on route to Finland today!

Very frustrating trying to use this app as a visitor to Finland. First it wouldn't verify my mobile number. I solved that by contacting customer support. Now I can't add a payment card. Tried both Android and iPhone devices. Why not just install contactless payments on your trains, buses and trams?

Fails to send verification codes to foreign mobiles so you can't use it to buy tickets, and the public transport system doesn't just let you use cards so you're pretty much stuck. Have to find somewhere to buy paper tickets like something from 30 years ago.

Opened app and it does not translate to English. Cannot receive a verification SMS to my number (my number is a Norwegian number and it was entered properly). No point in using the app if it does not work well for folks that do not speak Finnish. Then, it prohibited me from using Google Maps, despite already having a route planned in Google Maps.

It's quicker to go to the bus stop than to work out the app. It doesn't remember same old stops, it clears itself at the drop of a hat and DOESN'T offer all options. It wants us to use the metro and walk 2-3km every day.
