I'm new to the service and a bit overwhelmed currently as I'm attempting to get up to speed but so far I find the content and variety of opinions as well as the quality of the journalism to be much better than what I get from both the NYT and WSJ... I do believe that I have found my new normal, insofar as sources for current news discussions go....

This app is absolutely atrocious. The interface is primitive and clumsy, there is almost no customization. Video player is unstable and slow with no options. Only good point is reading aloud of articles.

There's just so much noise on top of posts of people you follow in this app. I want to see a post and watch a video on it, not get a random other post spoken through voice to text WHILE I'm trying to watch a video, and then have the video straight up stop working. I detest this approach to UX and faking engagement by forcing people through content that never asked for. My first time using the app and I am taken on a tour of how someone's trying to fake their usage metrics instead of the content.

It has potential but needs a lot of work. Even the search bat doesn't function well. I'm trying to find articles on a particular topic, but when I use the search bar to find posts about it, it doesn't bring up a single related article. If I Google the topic, it brings up lots of substack articles, most of which have the topic in the title.

No good for podcast and video. This app used be for reading content, but I primarily use it for podcasts with paid content. Unfortunately, the player of Substack is terrible. No incremental skipping fwd or back. Also, recently the number of notifications for new content went through the roof. Not sure which settings to change to turn them off.

Actively far worse than just using the browser. The only added value is tracking where you were on an article. The context menu is horrible, appears unwanted all the time, won't go away until you click something, and you can't even open a link in the browser, or follow a footnote link in the same page

Couldn't get past the 1st page so it's not looking good. I can only see the top half of the page asking how I'd like to receive notifications so not only can't I see ask the options but I can't click to confirm my response & move on. Can't find any way to see the full screen so not a great start. It's the only app I've ever had this happen. I've emailed their customer support so let's see how long that takes. Currently I'm distinctly unimpressed.

An app that is 99% excellent basically ruined by the fact that, when reading an article, if you don't stop scrolling *incredibly* carefully, releasing your finger from the screen causes the top menu bar to drop down and obscure the top lines. Absolutely infuriating and ruins the reading experience. Maybe it's not an issue on all phones but it certainly is on my Pixel and it's not an issue I've had with any other app.
Peter Empson
I periodically install the app to see if the reading experience has improved. Still the menue pops down over the top lines of text. Still inadvertently selected text can't be unselected by clicking away. Still no option to enlarge the font. The web experience on mobile (Firefox) is still also poor. Why haven't you implemented chat on web? Why can't we turn off the notes feature? The comments section doesn't do long threads well, the paging works poorly and often you end up back on page 1.

Not a good android app. Can't switch to landscape. There isn't full screen in video player, so I can't have a small overlay video player overtop my other apps. Love the service. Hate the app as it currently is. I am forced to watch videos through my email. But they often freeze the picture when I navigate the playback position. I believe that an application should improve the ability to access the content and not hinder it. I am sure it will improve eventually. But as is, I have no use for this.

I was hoping this app would be a "Reader" with functions to make *reading* easier. Would be nice to be able to adjust text "size" or "zoom" photos in subs. And, I have a "connectivity" issue if I leave the app open or take "too long" to read or take "too long" to type a comment on paid subs, I get "there was an error loading comments" and the "little red circling" buffering thing. It's much easier to read the subs in my browser.
Vitaly
Awful experience. Videos don't have full screen mode. If you are watching a video and scroll down to see text, the video will stop! Not paused, but stopped, so then you'd have to scroll back up to the video and use progress slider to find the part where it stopped to continue watching.
Sonnie
The current version works while the old one didn't. I've just played around a little so far. The one negative I noticed is that chat is available on iOS but not on Android yet. __________ Old review: Even after uninstalling and reinstalling, clearing the cache, etc, all I get are error messages. "There was an error loading your inbox. Retry?" Clicking OK did nothing. Same with other functions. My library doesn't load. Latest button doesn't do anything. Total fail for me, so I'm uninstalling.
Kelly Garcia
Love most of the functionality and happy you finally made it to Android. Have an issue with the "archive" feature. That function seems intended to mirror the "saved" section on desktop site. Neither section appears as an option on the other platform and the two don't match / sync. I now have 2 separate lists called 2 separate things on 2 separate platforms. Either allow editing of archive, add saved to the app or better suggestion..both.
Mike Harvey
Nice to have an app, but it's very confusing. Very easy to accidentally archive articles, they disappear never be seen again. And then I got into a mode where all I could do was look at articles but I couldn't see the inbox anymore or find any way to get back to it. I think the app needs some work before it's usable.
Scott Kurtzeborn
I installed this after subscribing to my first substack. The experience is okay if all you want to do is read the article. In many other ways, the mobile browser experience on your phone is better. For example, if you're going back to an article you already read, there's no "find in page" search option!? This seems like a basic thing in an article reading app.
Anthony Fox
Best app to date. It can read the article's text to you while you are in the shower, eating breakfast, or driving the car, allowing you to multitask. Or, you can just read, if you prefer. Great articles by very informed and professional writers abound. No bias here. If you are not here, you are nowhere. Excellent and flexible tool.
Nathaniel Hamovitz
Lots of good writers and a p decent interface for reading! Update: recently running into a weird behavior where the anchor text for hyperlinks is truncated if it's more than a few words, with an ellipse at the end. Many of the writers I like cite quotes by making all or most of the text a link to the source, which makes this behavior very jarring. Wish this would not happen! Also, I appreciate having both Archive and Save functionality, but I wish the distinction was explained somewhere.
