SPELLING BEE

THE CROSSWORD
Subscribers can play the same daily puzzle that’s printed in The New York Times, in our app. Crosswords increase in difficulty throughout the week, so there’s something for everyone.

CONNECTIONS
Our newest word game lets you group words with a common thread. See if you can do it with 4 mistakes or fewer.

SUDOKU
Looking for a numbers game, minus the math? Play Sudoku and fill each 3x3 set of boxes with numbers 1–9. Play a new puzzle every day in easy, medium or hard mode.

THE MINI CROSSWORD
The Mini is all the fun of The Crossword, but you can solve it in seconds. These word games don’t increase in difficulty throughout the week and feature simpler clues.

TILES
Unwind while you match elements in the day’s pattern — the key is to make consecutive matches.

LETTER BOXED
Create words using letters around the square. Letter Boxed is another fun way to test your word-making skills.

Not ready for prime time. I've been using the app for years on a variety of devices. Rarely does activity, progress, completions, etc. sync correctly with my account on the NYT website. If keeping a tally of your gold star days is important to you then I strongly recommend ONLY solving the puzzle each day from a computer logged into your account on the website.

Would be great if it brought an accessible mobile experience to NYT games, but that's not the case. Having to open the games in browser is redundant. Also, not even all the games have a browser link option, such as Letter Boxed and Wordle. One of the good things about the app is its ease of crossword access but the font was recently changed to something very thin (hard to see) and the keyboard lags. Sometimes I can't see the puzzle clue/hint/theme intended for the whole puzzle that gets printed.

Great puzzles, bad app. If you're thinking you can use this app and work on puzzles on different devices/desktop, you're out of luck. Sometimes it syncs, often it doesn't. It's really irritating. Adding the bee was nice, but about half of the week it doesn't load that day's bee, it gets suck on yesterday. No amount of cache clearing, logging out/in, etc. solves any of these problems

Latest update made Spelling Bee actually annoying to play - there's now a delay and prominent animation either confirming or denying a found word, which is really frustrating. The delay forces me to go slower than my brain wants to go, and the motion of the animation is distracting. Not sure if other people like this change, but at the very least, I'd like to be able to turn it off. Seems like an accessibility oversight.

I use this app every day. Controls are counterintuitive, keyboard gets stuck on letters, and I feel like the keyboard interface is prone to typos (though that part could be used error, of course.). Really wish Statistics were available in the app...given that the full Crossword is a paid service, I'd expect more features in the app.

Edit: the problem below seems to have been fixed. Zero complaints now, app is great! One nice feature would be statistics in the app, but mobile site seems to work just fine for that. (Prior complaint: The archive used to always go to the last puzzle I accessed, but a recent update causes it to always bounce back to the current month. Having to change the month and year every time I access the archive is tedious.)

Great way to do the NYT crosswords on mobile. While I still generally prefer doing the crossword on the computer due to having a bigger screen, this app makes it easy to navigate and enter answers. Gave 4/5 stars because some of the other games available through the NYT Crossword subscription are not available in the app (Tile, etc). Spelling Bee is there, though it sometimes has issues updating to the current puzzle. And Spelling Bee doesn't even show up on my partner's app.

The NYT crossword puzzles are very good, the gold standard really. The app is pretty good but there is room for improvement. Some specific requests: - provide access to bonus monthly puzzles, cryptics, and puns and anagrams (basically all NYT crosswords) - fix old links to wordplay. They're all on xwordinfo, it's not that hard. - the app doesn't save progress on the free puzzle in every pack to the cloud. It also doesn't indicate that the puzzle is finished on the selection screen. It should do both. - the keyboard gets stock sometimes and misses a key up event and just stays with one key popped up. That seems fixable. - would be nice to have acrostics too. - add variety as well.

It's all the NYT Crosswords for the last 25 years, with the new puzzle of the day every day. The app works perfectly. The puzzles range from easy (Mondays) to very difficult for most solvers (Saturdays). Sunday puzzles are only about as hard as mid-weeks, but the grid is larger, so they take longer, and there is often some kind of trick, or theme, which can make them harder until you figure it out, and then it can give you a leg up. NYT generally publishes the best crossword puzzles in the land.

Overall great, and I love doing crosswords, but one issue that is very annoying is that occasionally when I click the right arrow to the next clue, it will instead go to a random square in the bottom right corner. This happens pretty frequently, on every crossword, and while it doesn't affect the actual crossword itself, it is very annoying. That is my only issue with this app.

I've used the Shortyz app for years, and recently switched to this one because of an issue with the other. This app is a bit more polished, and it's definitely easier to navigate through the archive. One complaint: I wish there was a key to toggle the direction instead of having to click on the current square, which can be tricky with big fingers. Shortyz uses the space bar, and out of habit I keep pressing the rebus key, which seems too prominently placed given that those are relatively rare.

For the subscription price of $40/yr this app should be flawless and it's nowhere near that. The touch recognition on the keypad is terrible. I'm constantly having to go back and delete/add letters that I've typed (I know I've typed them because I can feel the small vibration from the keyboard). Occasionally when I type a letter, the larger version of it that is only supposed to be there momentarily stays there, covering the next clue. The Spelling Bee also does not work well.

In the last week, the Spelling Bee constantly loses all the words I've entered. I don't know if it's a sync issue with different devices or something else, but it really isn't worth the subscription price if this can't work correctly. In the evening, I enter enough words to reach Amazing or Genius, and in the morning when I check to see what words I missed, my entries are gone and I'm back down to Nice. This is NOT NICE! Fix the app - I see lots of others with this issue.

Apparently having a subscription to the NYTimes isn't enough, and they want an additional $6.99 per month to play the crosswords. That's pretty crazy considering you can get various complicated games like chess that simulate intelligent opponents for free, or for a one-time price under $10, but this simple game that offers very little beyond the pencil and paper version costs nearly as much as a Netflix subscription.

I have used the NYT Crossword app daily for several years. I look forward to the new daily puzzle (and mini) being posted. Something changed recently, though, and now the front is lighter/thinner. It makes it really hard to read. I can't find anything in settings to change it back so all I can tell is it must have been an update. To me, the crossword is now unplayable.

Overall, pretty good app. A couple small critiques: 1) The crossword keyboard is not the best, I find it often misses a tap, causing me to mistype a word. My guess would be that this has to do with the hitboxes of the keys not covering the space in between. 2) I'd like to see the stats and other features that I've seen in screenshots of the iOS version.

This app has had horrible and frequent random hangs for years. When typing a letter, sometimes it will take upwards of 10 seconds to register. Just feels horrible- occasionally the app crashes as well. This is across multiple devices, all of which should be able to run a text game with ease. Been waiting for this problem to be resolved for years at this point.

Great puzzles, of course! The app, however, can be a bit vexing. When opening the app into a puzzle in progress, sometimes there is a significant delay (5 to 30 seconds) before the app is ready to accept taps and typing. I resolve this by closing and reopening the app...until that doesn't help any more, at which point I clear the cache...until that doesn't help...finally I clear cache and delete data, reopen the app and log in again, which works great for a while...wash, rinse, repeat.
