Description of renshuu - Japanese learning

A cute, ad-free, and enjoyable learning experience is waiting for you in the Renshuu community! The free version is unlimited: there’s no timer before you are forced to pay!

★ A path for every learning style and every goal ★
Whether you are getting started with the alphabets or have been studying for years, jump in exactly where you belong! Don’t waste time going through what you already know.

Renshuu maintains learning paths for most textbooks, the JLPT, Kanji Kentei, and for those who just want to learn. You can also carve out your own path! Our community has over 10,000 user-made lessons for even more focused learning.

★ Cute, relaxing, and fun ★
Our mascot Kao-chan is here to let you enjoy learning Japanese, whether it’s through collectible coins every time you quiz, a character that evolves as you learn, manga pages that you unlock, or hundreds of hand-made illustrations.

Additionally, we have both single and multiplayer games to help you keep your learning and reviewing fresh!

★ Personal service ★
We are just a two-person company - and we don’t use chat bots. That means that every question you have gets an answer directly from us.

★ Rich, in-depth materials ★
■ Vocabulary: over 15,000 native-recorded audio files, 17,000 hand-picked images, and 160,000 example sentences make understanding vocabulary a breeze. Our growing library of accent/pitch data can even help you with accent reduction.
■ Kanji: 12,000+ kanji, with no limits on what you can study! Over 2,000 colorful mnemonics help you to understand and retain the meanings.
■ Grammar: Over 800 different expressions, each complete with native-written model sentences, construction diagrams, audio, and over 7,500 hand-made quiz questions.
■ Sentences: Thousands of sentences complete with audio, divided by theme and difficulty levels.

★ A superior quiz system designed around Japanese ★
Our SRS-for-Japanese system doesn’t treat Japanese materials like flashcards to be memorized, and breaks every item down into individual components so you can understand, and not just memorize. Mastery schedules keep you studying only what you need to, pushing weaker materials to the front for you to focus on.

Dozens of different question styles keep things fresh, while a flexible input system (multiple choice, typing, or writing) lets you answer the way that you want to.

★ Customizable down to the last character ★
Renshuu doesn’t believe that there is a single way of studying that everyone should adhere to. Our expansive settings and customizations let you adjust the learning environment to what works best for you.

As someone who's studied the language independently and half-heartedly throughout the years, this app is by far the best Japanese learning resource I've ever come across. It's engaging, effective, forgiving, and thorough. I only wish it were around back when I was in middle school! Most effective for people with some knowledge of the language looking to become fluent; else you may want / need some supplementary study materials! P.S. Don't shirk kanji studies! >:C

It's pretty rough around the edges. It doesn't seem to be anything really creative about the learning like some other apps. The button placement is not really convenient for screen to screen so you find yourself jumping around. Feels old and clunky. I like the cute character in the egg evolution idea. But the app itself is not a very smooth or creative learning experience.

Fantastic app for casual learning. In less than a week, I can confidently identify and read 30 characters and 6 basic phrases. The cute art, font choices, and quiz set up make the app easy to use, and the 'gatcha' element is very satisfying after each quiz. This app was also made by an extremely friendly pair of people who are great to talk to in the event of an issue or just to say hi. 10/10

I used duolingo for a while, and in the beginning it was great for memorizing katakana and hiragana, but I never learned anything about making sentences and recognizing other important parts of the language. this has been GREAT at teaching about how the sentence structure works, learning vocabulary and studying Kanji, which I couldn't find on duolingo or other apps. plus it's really customizable, so it's easy to set a pace that works for you. plus the pro version is less expensive than others.

genuinely great app for people seeking to learn Japanese, I've gotten great use out of it and am steadily improving, those seeking a jumping off point for the language are unlikely to find a better service for entirely free. I've experienced no ads through my 6 months of use at this point and their is an option to pay for more features but the default features go above and beyond.

this is really fun to use, and has an easygoing, fun but solid approach to learning japanese where it includes really cute mini games that are very immersing. + a layout thats easy on the eyes. (On dark mode) one issue is that it doesn´t seem to always process when you actually write the letters correctly, but that could just be me. Besides that i highly recommend this

Renshuu itself has been a really great resource for learning Japanese, especially since the subscription is so affordable (just $4/month). It has grammar lessons, sentences, alphabets, JLPT lessons, an extensive community, and gamifies the learning process. Its interface is a little rough around the edges, and since there is so much to do navigating isn't super intuitive, but the more you use it the easier it is to find your way around.

renshuu is the best Japanese learning app I've used - and I've tried a fair few! It combines all the best aspects of all the pieces I've seen so far, and even adds some cool new stuff I'd not seen before! I'm a huge fan of the customizability, and the games and motivational tricks are also super useful! The only thing I'm not clear on is if there's a way to study without learning - but honestly, I'm no longer sure if there's anything I really need such a mode for!

Has all of the critical aspects to learn a language: a reasonable number of new items to learn per day, mnemonics to help you learn them, an option to make the questions more difficult by needing to write the answers yourself rather than select from multiple choice options (I like needing to write my Kana rather than select the right one), and the ability to mark items for review or to review all items. It also has cute artwork! Those are all free, but it's so good I might buy the full version.

Been using the app for 2 weeks now and it's been amazing. I've been off and on studying Japanese for about 5 years and it's been a struggle to find resources that work for my ADHD brain. Other apps/books got boring with the repetition, but with renshuu's variety of quizzes, I can study for so long without it getting bored or frustrated. It's a small thing but I love how it tell you it wants kanji/kana instead of outright marking you wrong. I could say so much more but character limit.

Amazing. I've tried several Japanese learning apps and this one is the best so far. Perfect for beginners and advanced alike. It has audio, a whole dictionary, games, varying difficulty, community content, and direct personal contact to the creator. It even lets you practice writing, which many apps lack yet is essential for eventual fluency! I cannot reccomend this app more, even for those who already know Japanese but just want to brush up their skills.

I love Renshuu! You can set your own practice pace and create personalized lesson plans. The dictionary is vast and impressive. I refer to it even when I'm learning somewhere else, it's just that good! It even breaks down Kanji into comprehensible pieces. The games are fun and diverse, and the grammar lessons are super helpful. The website version is also fantastic - it matches up perfectly to the app version. If I could add one thing, it would be speaking exercises for pronunciation practice.

Great app! A little unpolished but extremely versatile and customizable. Best for intermediate learners. The best app for the technical aspects of language learning. Paid for Pro but none of the features are available to me. It just keeps telling me to subscribe to Pro, when I try to, it says "Error You have already subscribed to Renshuu Pro". Can't contact support in app. Edit: Fixed by canceling subscription and repurchase. Only charged once.

Love this app! Has so much information, tons of fun games, great study tools, etc. I immediately upgraded to pro because I could see how useful it would be. One thing the developers might consider adding in the future is short reading texts at different levels; I find information is more solidified for me when I see it in a meaningful context. Or maybe that's already in the app somewhere! There's a lot here, and I feel like I'm just scratching the surface. Great app made by passionate people.

This is one of the best Japanese learning apps I ever used. The lessons are short, easy to follow, and flexible, making custom lessons to help you further with certain characters. The games are enjoyable at the same time learning the characters/words without being frustrating. Also, I like the art a lot, it's very cute!! 10/10, would recommend.

App is almost perfect, no ads and allows you to learn along with a textbook. Unfortunately there is no speaking function, so users can practice speaking sentences. I found the feature I didn't see before, they do allow you to study individual chapters. I do think it's a bit hard to find, but I'm glad it's there.

I am learning at a much quicker pace than when I took Japanese in high school. also, you can collect cute little stickers for completing quizzes and such. There are also cute little games to help you learn how to properly draw the figures at a more comfortable pace and learn how to do them quicker too. I haven't explored the full app yet but what I have seen so far makes this one of the best learning apps I've seen.

I haven't been using this app long but I am loving it. The Quick Draw game is great for practicing writing, and the way the auto-lessons are structured and word lists are done really well. The ability to make your own lessons to focus on trouble spots is a great addition too. I'm actually quite excited to learn enough to be able to play the Shiritori game.
