Description of BirdNET

How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? The BirdNET research project uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify more than 3,000 of the most common species worldwide. You can record a file using the microphone of your Android device and see if BirdNET correctly identifies the probable bird species present in your recording. Get to know the birds around you and help us to collect observations by submitting your recordings.

BirdNET is a joint project of the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Chemnitz University of Technology.

Excellent. Overall, I highly recommend this ap. I like the way it labels the chosen bird calls with "most likely" or other words to indicate strong confidence or degrees of. It's fantastic. I just wish that I could override or label- only rarely, but it would be nice. I had a Ladderback woodpecker and it was recorded asanacorn woodpecker. I wish I could change it because I save some of the labeled recordings. Again, I highly recommend this ap!

Works perfectly on my wife's pixel XL but for my LG v30 I can highlight audio recordings and send them in for analysis but I cannot listen to the section I recorded. This makes it hard to send in the right audio clip. I see others have had this problem as well. I really hope it gets fixed. It's a wonderful app.

Love this app. Hear birds on regular basis that I can't see or ID by sound. I know basics which are a result of being able to see the birds while they sing. For elusives like warblers, this app easily picks up their song. The sensitivity is much better than I expected it would be. Within 10 minutes of finding this app I learned of a bird I've never seen but hear frequently. Two days later, same thing. And to double check the results I go to Merlin. Wish I found this app sooner!

This app is incredibly good at bird song identification. The AI is remarkable. As you record bird songs, the sounds display in a colorful sliding frequency graph. I find it helpful to see the shape of the bird songs this way. Somehow it helps me to remember the identification. Also it reveals subtle complexity in the sounds and sometimes shows there are frequencies that are hard to hear.

This is a cool ap for the bird watcher. There is a tremendous amount of information in the app to browse even without the identification function. You need an internet connection for real time identification but it does allow you to record the bird song and do the analysis part later. It does store the location of each recording. It does a really good job of identification even with the fainter bird song.

As another user mentions, playback of recordings does not work at all in app. If you record multiple birds in succession, this means you are wholly unable to listen to the recordings and select which bird calls to have analyzed. This makes the app almost entirely useless. I'd expect an app that demands so many permissions to deliver on performance, but it doesn't. What a tremendous disappointment this app is.

I've been really impressed with this so far, especially compared to similar apps. It isn't always 100% certain what the bird is, but its best guesses are often correct or very close. The quality of audio it's able to work with is also surprising (lots of background noise where I live, but doesn't seem to be an issue most of the time).

I really like this app. It is very accurate identifying birds I hear on my walks. It is easy to use and you can see a graph of the birds call. I would rate it with 5 stars if the brain could be downloaded as well. After you select the part of the recording you want analyzed, the app sends it to Germany for analysis on the Birdnet computer. In a minute or 30 seconds I get a response--if I have a decent network connection. Unfortunately, many of my birding events do not have network service.

This app is terrific. A few small quirks, but nonetheless, i have been able to correctly identify every bird song i have fed into this app (as confirmed later by other resources). You need almost zero volume. I've been surprised at how much signal-to-noise it can tolerate. Honestly, this is one of the most useful apps i have ever downloaded. Well done!

Great fun! This makes it easy to figure out what a bird is by it's call or song. It has great accuracy (so far) and can pick out birds even when there are more than one. It automatically saves the recordings as well as location, date, etc. It has easily accessible links to the best information online directly from the app, also.

I'm so impressed by this app! Detection quality is surprisingly high. User interface is mostly intuitive. Really good at filtering out most background noise (damn you, wind!). I'd like to be able to download the sound clips that I record within the app and to upload sound clips from my phone into the app. Highly recommend!

It's a good start but needs work. When you open the app it immediately starts recording. Sometimes when you think you're playing back what you just recorded it actually is recording again. An option to move forward in the graph is missing and would help a great deal when trying to select a clip. I look forward to future improvements!

This is one of my favorite apps it is absolutely perfect. It has so many great features. Check out the tutorial so you can see everything it does. Record and identify birds with links to excellent informational sites. It's simple to record and submit a bird call and song. It automatically saves your searches for you to refer back to later. Peruse the menu for yourself. There's also a list of birds in your area. A must-have for any bird nerd.

I am very impressed with BirdNET! So far it has been right most of the time. BirdNET works best when I'm not too close to noise (cars, running water, wind blowing through trees). Making short selections around the birdsong of interest helps a lot, as does turning up the gain setting enough to get a clear spectrogram (but not so much that the spectrogram starts smearing vertically, which is indicative of clipping).

Tried this app and I dont make time to do reviews, but have to say "WOW" what an amazing app and congratulations to getting it spot on. Even its "guesses" were right on. If people have any trouble with this app, they should remember that it can only record what it can detect, and the volume of the subject bird, and/or the quality of the recording device (ie phone microphone) will affect results. I am new to birding, but I will be using this whenever I can . Very helpful! Thank you!

It has its glitches, but for the information it provides, BirdNET can't be beat. I can't scroll through a recording, so once a sound has moved off my screen, it's lost to me. And I wish the bird info linked over to Merlin or another Cornell Bird Lab site, rather than Wikipedia. But those are minor complaints, far outweighed by the identifications I've been able to make with the apps' help. Fantastic resource!

Great interface. Has trouble with unusual calls and regional song variations, which I have noticed with bluejays and carolina wrens. The app also thinks everything is a black and white warbler if it can't recognise it even when the ID isn't hard to determine. The playback button is completely broken and serves no function. Still better than any other app I've tried so far, just needs a little more development and food for the AI.

I've had this app for quite a few years, but the last 3 to 4 months it has stopped identifying species calling them human or unidentifiable. It will say only a wild guess and list something totally off the wall. For instance. I know a sandhill crane has a very distinct call and app said a turkey and turned around in the next second and called it human. I have uninstalled the app and reinstall it but it has not seemed to solve the issue. I'll keep it at three stars because it used to be awesome!
