Just the app I have been looking for :) would have been 5 stars but for a few features that are missing. The Camara does not take full control for zoom and focus on my HTC 10 which makes some small species difficult to capture. Also it would be nice if when trying to select an existing photo for identification it understood folders as scrolling through every single image is tedious when I could put images into a specific folder. Otherwise a great app.

It's better than nothing. It would be nice if it wouldn't just give up when it can't get to a species also maybe don't go back to dicot so quickly (if I didn't move the camera off this plant, it shouldn't have to start all over at dicot). It's great when it works, disappointing when it tries and fails and just burns up some battery and data bandwidth (which isn't as freely available in the sticks, where I need it, as it is in my back yard).

Google lens in the photo app does a better job of telling you what you are looking at and the option to search for similar bugs. I've had many times recently where this app gives you a family name but not the exact answer. It just leaves you with that general answer without giving an option of searching further within the app. It is a nice touch that it has observation and achievements feature but you can't manually enter it in if the app doesn't seem recognize the bug. Makes it less useful.

This is a really awesome app. I was a biology major in college and wish I had this then. It's like pokemon go but with real plants/animals. I've never really been interested in plants but this app makes it fun. I've actually learned a lot about them so far in a way that makes it "stick". I also like that I can share locations with the scientific community. Only downside is it's almost impossible to capture species if the animal is in motion. Birds are impossible, as well as flying insects.

I've only had this a few days and I'm hooked. The app can be finicky and want a very specific angle to identify what you're scanning but, understandably so. Also, it slows down the use of my cell phone's camera while using it in the app. It's much more responsive in the preloaded camera app. Again, Seek is doing a LOT all at once. I'm impressed with what it is and can do.

Great idea, but difficult to execute. Getting ID on live, moving insects, birds, mammals, etc is very difficult. Even plants in a slight breeze are difficult to get an ID on. App and camera take too long to load, and camera has to reload any time you zoom in/out. I will stick with it, but I often get frustrated by the wait time and lack of clear ID.

Good, but it takes a long time for the camera to open and it takes a long time to capture an image and there are unnecessary warnings that you have to acknowledge EVERY TIME you want to use the camera. When things are small, fast moving, or both its basically impossible to use the app. That sorta stuff makes it way less fun to use, being frustrated by the app takes the fun out of it!

I've found that smaller species, especially bugs are pretty much impossible to identify unless they are dead. Even then, your camera has to be pretty good, which is unfortunate for me. I think the camera feature of the app needs to be better optimized to focus, as I noticed that trying to focus through the app is more difficult/slower than focusing through my camera. The slowness of the camera through the app has caused me to lose identification of several bug species. Great potential though.

It's really fun yet sophisticated. Easy to use. I had issues with it having trouble with my camera. It was difficult to make it focus on the plant, can't zoom, and the image before and after taking the picture looked different (more background in the after pic). Also, after you take the pictures, where do they go? I would like to save them and look at them later but can't find them.

Great app for general enthusiasts and curious observers! It is a great tool for learning about the natural world we live in. The app can get a little slow sometimes when loading the camera. It also struggles sometimes to give an exact identification. I recently upgraded phones and had to start all over with my collection of identified wildlife. Even when signed in with the same email, I am not able to access my previously scanned and ID'd findings. I would very much like an option to restore.

An awesome app! I use it whenever I bring my phone outdoors on walks or trips to trails or hikes. The camera aspect can be finicky, but it's expected. It's kind of impossible to capture birds though, as you can't get close enough without having to zoom in the screen so far that you can't even tell what you're looking at. It is still an awesome app, and I recommended it to anyone who is bored and loves nature like me!

I love using Seek. It's a free app that can ID thousands of things offline! It's downright amazing! Sometimes it has a hard time getting to species, but if you take the time to find a decent specimen in the right lighting with a good background, it will usually get it. I use it mainly for plants and used it on the Pacific Crest Trail this year! It is substantially harder to get a ID with a moving animal or bug, but that's hardly the app's fault!

This app opens a whole new world to your casual hiker (or anybody with a backyard, really). I've had this app installed for a day and I've already developed a deeper appreciation for the huuuge variety of planta and animals that make up the ecosystem that we walk through each day. Get this app! A gripe: the identification system is hit and miss. You might need a bit of time to find an angle for a photo good enough to identify something. That's okay with plants, problematic with animals.
Matt Graves
It needs to be more responsive. Insects/animals are almost always moving, so the app needs to start faster, go into camera mode and take a picture right now. The time it takes for the picture to be taken, once you finally get there, is painfully slow. Make the information exchange with the servers a second priority and get rid of the junk and you'll have a fine app.

As others have said, great concept, but delivery leaves something to be desired. It's buggy: crashes a lot during use. Also every time my phone went to screensaver and I brought it back up the app crashed. It would be nice if the screen advising you not to trespass, be respectful etc. had a "don't show this again' box to click. It's annoying enough to reboot the app so many times but then you have to get past that box too. As far as accuracy, it's so-so. Trouble is, I can assess the accuracy with plants I know but the whole reason to have something like this is to ID plants you don't know. But I can't be confident with the ID of unknown plants. Then I realized it might just be too much to ask. We live in this "instant gratification" world where we want to know the answer NOW! It's probably better to post a pic on some reputable website and wait for accurate ID or go old school and (gasp) check the ID in a field guide... you know, a book! :)

One of my favorite apps, but i just wish that the zoom feature of the camera was clearer. When i zoom in with the app it gives me a rather distorted view. It's much clearer when I'm just taking a picture with my phone without Seek app up. It's rather difficult to identify things you can't get real close to without scaring, like birds and insects.

This app shows a lot of promise and has already made a lot of progress since I first downloaded it and was forced to undownload because it hardly worked. I waited a while and then re-downloaded and it works much better now. It is super fun to use and I love "collecting" observations. However the camera does still have issues, it doesn't always open, zoom well, or pan well. After you take a photo it lags and if you move your camera it will not be the photo you thought you had taken. It also uses up a significant amount of my phones battery life. Not sure why. It's also a little annoying that you are required to have the location on to save observations. Aside from technical issues there are a couple of suggestions that I have. If seek does not know what species I am pointing the camera at, but I know what it is, it needs an option to let me enter in the species and still add it to my observation list. I have a great picture of a California Sea Lion but Seek can only identify it to family so it won't add it to my observations. This is kind of silly because I am 100% certain that it is a california sea lion. Either allow us to manually input the species when we know what it is, or make the connection with inaturalist go both ways. If an observation you took with seek and then sent to inaturalist is identified then it should update and add that to your list of observations in seek. Also there are many species that seek will never be able to feasibly identify down to that level (e.g. insects that require a microscope to see differences between species) In this case, seek should still add observations to the list at the family or genus level. I would love to have a list of families and genuses that I have "collected" as well as species.

This is super fun to use... When it works. It often does strange things with the blur and it's really hard to take good pictures. I wish there was an option to add pictures we've taken in the camera after the plant is identified. I also think it would be cool if, when it identities a genus or a family instead of a species, it told us why it's that classification and gives us examples of similar looking organisms to choose from (as a tentative/to-be-complete entry).
