Description of Flora Incognita

FLORA INCOGNITA - DISCOVER THE DIVERSITY OF NATURE

What's blooming? With the Flora Incognita app, this question is quickly answered. Take a picture of a plant, find out what it's called and learn everything you want to know with the help of a fact sheet. Highly precise algorithms based on artificial intelligence identify wild plants even when they are not (yet) in bloom!

In the Flora Incognita app you can easily view all your collected plant finds in a observation list. Maps show where you have found your plants. This way you can see how your knowledge about wild plants is growing.

But Flora Incognita is even more! The app is free of charge and without advertising, because it is part of a scientific research project that aims to improve nature conservation. The collected observations are used to answer scientific research questions that deal, for example, with the spread of invasive species or the effects of climate change on biotopes.

In regular stories, you will learn about news from the project, get insights into the scientific work or will be made curious about what is happening in nature right now.

HOW GOOD IS FLORA INCOGNITA?
Species identification with Flora Incognita is based on Deep Learning algorithms that have an accuracy of well over 90%. It is important to take sharp and as close as possible pictures of plant parts such as flower, leaf, bark or fruit for a high identification accuracy.

Yes. You can use Flora Incognita anytime, as long as you want. It is free to use, with no ads, no premium version and no subscription. But maybe you will enjoy searching and identifying plants so much that it will become a new hobby. We have received this feedback many times!

WHO DEVELOPED FLORA INCOGNITA?
The Flora Incognita app is developed by scientists from the Technical University of Ilmenau and the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry Jena. Its development was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety as well as the Thuringian Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation and the Foundation for Nature Conservation Thuringia. The project was awarded as an official project of the "UN Decade of Biodiversity" and won the Thuringian Research Award in 2020.

So much unlocked potential. They have the right idea. Names aren't always what I expect. Dandelions and Lithidora under different names rather than the common name. Needs to be a little bit more user friendly and have several images available for each plant. Also, maybe let you choose which photo you want to use for each plant in your garden. Maybe still needs more data as well. Maybe a tutorial optional for details after a few plants. Make editing your own plants after posting them possible.

It got a lot easier when I discovered the ability to import existing photos. Sometimes conditions were right for a photo but there wasn't any Wi-Fi in that location. Now I can take any pictures that I want and import them.

I wanted to know what the stuff that started growing as I cleared some trees on my land was. When I downloaded this app I started with a couple of plants I knew and it got them right so I tried others. A couple of times what it came up with didn't seem right so I tried again and got something that matched what I was seeing. I am definitely keeping the app and recommending it to my friends. If I could make a suggestion to the developers it would be to add if the plant is an invasive species.

helped me identifying every plant in my garden with 100%. of course it struggles with subvariants, but thats irrelevant. maybe with further improvements of the database it would become more specific. anyway, it works flawless offline, you just collect your images abroad and let them identify at home. very nice.

Initial impression very positive. Integrates well with camera, and offline mode is nice feature if, like me, you rely on wifi for data. UI design appears solid, though. I am struggling to locate the near-focus lock mentioned in docs on my cell (Nokia 3.4) with Android One.

F.I. works with photo gallery maybe 1 attempt in 30, As a rule, after I select gallery it hangs for a moment, then jumps back to camera mode. I can't tell if sharing from gallery to F.I. would help, because the app did not install with sharing enabled. Would like to like this app more, but it would have to work with previously saved photos.

This is the app to get. I've used several others and they all have monthly fees. This app is accurate and highly informative. Also they have fun achievements that you can get by just getting out there in nature and taking pictures. In the future I would like an add on to identify mushrooms.

Epic app! Not only is it accurate and have a fantastic UI in which you can select very specific parts of the plant you want analyzed, but it has no background data harvesting trackers like all the other plant apps I have tried. Go to the non-profit Exodus Privacy to see which apps do and do not have secret trackers.

I love this app so much :) someone recommended it to me because I was getting interested in identifying plants on my walks. I used Google lens/image search but this is so much better! The app is really good at identifying not only flowers but also grasses, trees, shrubs, you name it. You get so much interesting info on the plants too! The app layout is easy to navigate and looks really cute as well :) My favorite feature is the suggested articles on plant-related topics. Five stars! 🌸⭐🌸

I was skeptical, but this app identifies about anything on my path. It couldn't ID a dead orchid or trees without leaves, but it works with cacti. It gives great prompts. Haven't tried shrooms

Excellent! Easy to use, intuitive menus. Very esy to handle pictures from camera or from phone storage. Please check below issue: Photos taken elsewhere and uploaded later to application, keep as observation location the location where photo has been uploaded not the original one and cannot be changed back to observation place. If there are some steps to follow in order to make the above changes, please notice me. Thank you!
