This is a great app for learning to read and understand words in a language you want to acquire. It tracks passive vocabulary accumulation so that you see progress, allows you to import content from the web, and most importantly, forces you to reckon with every word you don't understand until you do understand it. The listening feature is nice, but there is not as much podcast content there that is useful to me in learning Latin American Spanish as I would like. In sum, I love this app.

I couldn't even finish a single page of a story without running into a paywall. I have to upgrade to finish a single story? What a waste of my time. If this is by design, then it should be listed as a paid app. Also, the constant popups might be useful to users who are new to language-learning apps but are annoying to experienced users. There might be an option to disable these, but because of the need to upgrade I didn't bother looking. Lastly, the pronunciation of は in Japanese is wrong.

My first impression of this app is that it is not intuitive to use. After fumbling around to select the right language (it defaulted to English even though I first selected Italian), I chose a lesson to listen to. It doesn't let you know that you should pause the recording, and when you scroll to the next page popups keep appearing to let me know about all the words I just learned on the previous page. But I didn't actually learn anything.

Incredible way to learn a language. Sleezy subscription requirements. They allow access to some "premium" features (sentence translation to name one) for about 3 days or 5 lessons (not sure which) to make it seem like it's actually possible to learn a full language for free using this app, but then they lock it behind a subscription. They don't notify you at all. I don't blame them for wanting a subscription, it's a fantastic application and concept. Very sleezy way to do it though.

One of the best learning tools I've found for any language (in my case, Japanese). The draw for LingQ is that it allows you to import any text you like and create flashcards for spaced repetition study. For instance, I use the app mostly to import Japanese song lyrics and translate/memorize those lyrics so I can sing along. The icing on the cake is that the app actually is able to understand phrases and not only individual words, which is something many other tools lack. 5/5 for me!

Great app. The only problems I have are: the vocabulary list system is VERY buggy. You can go through five pages in a row and have the same words. NOT SIMILAR words but the SAME EXACT entries pop up time after time. Also, the "community definitions" of words are at least 50% of the time PLAIN WRONG, overly complicated, or even in another language. Other than that it's great.

Too expensive for what it offers. For German there's no option to properly translate and classify verbs with split prefixes and different verb forms. Too basic. The audio doesn't always match the word, and there is no 'report' button to correct the error. Good idea but somewhat lazy execution. For 13 bucks a month I expect more from a reader app. The app doesn't keep the original formating. Imagine translating a song without separate lines.

Seems difficult to navigate. The free version is extremely limited and practically worthless. I know several hundred words in Korean but still ran of free lingqs just by reading one story. I tried deleting some of the lingqs I had created so I could save new ones instead and continue reading but that didn't seem to help. This might be more effective if the first stories focused on the most commonly used words. I don't plan on investing in this app based on what I could see for free.

Update: Needs a way to rewind audio Generally a very good app with some instances of incorrect translations (can be corrected manually). However, biggest issue is that videos and transcripts are separated on the screen. Ideally the words appear like captions directly on the video otherwise it is extremely difficult to watch and read at the same time (a key way the brain associates words with action/visuals when learning a language).

I like this app a lot. I am serious about becoming fluent in portuguese, and it is moving me along significantly better and faster than other methods I've tried. I do have one complaint. I have only tried their Portuguese course, but I find that many of the recordings are of below-average quality. There's often static in the background, and sometimes I think I even hear the sounds of the outdoors. When I'm learning a new language, this makes things unnecessarily difficult.

I love LingQ. I couldn't ask for a better app for intermediate/advanced levels (even for current teachers) looking to really expand their abilities through assisted reading and audio that isn't too advanced, but also not too easy. This has re-ignited my passion for language. Although I do have many ideas in which to improve the app, I love the beginning stages and can't wait to see it grow with more content and maybe an external connection to quizlet and an area to journal using the new lingQ's!

I think LingQ is probably the best app you can get for trying to learn any foreign language. I really like the immersion and how you learn through seeing the same words repeated over and over again in the different stories and materials. The reason I'm not giving it five stars is because the interface is very clunky and not that intuitive. Also, I wish it were a little more guided. I wish it would occasionally suggest activities I should be doing. It's more of an app for experienced learners.
James Kimber
The content is amazing, but it's very awkwardly organized to the point that it's frustrating to use -- and I work in blockchain technology. Bookmarks seem non-existent. End of lesson quizzes are buried somewhere in hamburger menus. I don't even know what a LingQ is or what to do with one, but that's what differentiates this app from other language apps I'll stick with it because there is such a rich amount content and it truly is unique. Hopefully it'll become more pleasant to use in an update

Overall, a good app for learning languages. I have used it for well over a year working on multiple languages. There is on audio glitch. The app switches to an "American" voice that speaks phonetically. This is solved by minimizing the app and coming back to a native voice with the appropriate accent and intonation. I import ebooks, news, Netflix, and YouTube regularly.

Doesn't just spit out the awkward, formulaic translations you usually get online. Includes multiple definitions for words and has a really convenient shortcut to word reference, which is probably the best online dictionary for Spanish. The app has a lot of features and it can get confusing trying to navigate through them all, but they offer a tutorial and how-to videos. Levels from A1 to C2, and the advanced lessons really are advanced. Considering starting as a beginner in another language!

I am paying for this app but it's still prompting me to review every time I change screens. This is a huge UX/UI design problem. The app itself is fine, the spaced repetition is lacking, it wants you to save a certain number of definitions to learn each day, but has you review them so infrequently that you end up with huge lists of words that you could never get through. It also interfaces poorly with Android. My TTY settings caused my phone to read words in English when I clicked on them.
Eric VanDeGenachte
I'm equally critical of courses which are either: (1) full immersion or (2) very grammar-heavy & rote memorization without context. This app is the only one that blends reading of real-world texts from their huge library coupled with listening and relies on the INCIDENTAL absorption of vocabulary in a contextual settings. The speed with which flashcards can be generated is remarkable. Being able to upload your own content, link to YT videos, movies, ebooks, podcasts, is awesome. Best app ever!

I have used Lingq for about a year, and it's been a huge part of helping me increase my French vocabulary. Being able to look up words quickly, do vocabulary quizzes and listen to audio and videos has been a great time saver and resource. Everything I need is in one place. Well worth using, I personally pay for the upgrade versus free for the greatest benefit. Absolutely worth the money spent.
