Description of BBC Learning English

The official BBC Learning English app brings together all of your favourite lessons and presenters in one fantastic, simple-to-use package. It's the best way to keep your English up to date!

This month (May) is going to make the app even better. We are introducing our first series for low level learners – English My Way. We also have a brilliant new series to help you speak more naturally - British Chat. This series has no script – it’s just ordinary people using real English to talk about everyday topics.

And don’t forget, you asked to be able to download our audio programmes. Every audio programme now has a download button so you can listen off-line.

So, whether you want to study grammar, improve your pronunciation, develop your English through topical new stories or learn the latest phrases to use in your everyday conversations, our app has the series for you.

Learning English

The best way to learn a language is to practise a little bit every day. Our app helps you do that with daily updates of amazing, fun and topical lessons, transcripts and quizzes. Watch your English grow!

Features that will help you learn
Audio programmes that you can download. Watch or listen to each programme without using the text support. Then watch or listen again using the built-in transcripts and subtitles. Once you've practised your listening and reading skills, use the quizzes to test your understanding. The app will remember your scores so you can keep trying until you get the result you want.

When you're listening to an audio lesson, the programme will keep playing in the background even if the screen is turned off. So you can be on the bus, travelling by train, flying, walking or running and still have the perfect lesson in your ear.

Please add an option to control the resolution of the video. I think the videos run at 480p or 720p resolution. It is not a recommended resolution if you are from areas having poor internet connectivity. It consumed 150 MB for a 12 minutes news review. Please add the option to control the resolution and we are good to go. Thanks.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC... i have been using this App since last month and i have to say this is the best english learning App i have experienced so far. Lessons are very brief and understandable and most of the lessons have a quiz at the end of the lesson to check your knowledge. It is so satisfying when you get scores such as 4 out of 5 and 5 out of 5 since you are truly learning things like "Grammar". Some lessons can be downloaded and you can learn those lessons offline when you are free. 👍

Excellent app for English learners and people who want to learn more details about English (usage, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary etc.) and master it. Many funny and easy-to-understand videos. I strongly recommend.

The UI of the app is great. There are a lot of programs for Students and Teachers. The best thing of the app is there are daily programs for all. I can check the ability to speak with the right pronunciation. There are videos to realize the programs easily. I can see the daily updated news in the app also. The interesting part of the app is I can learn also with seeing drama. There are a lot of vocabulary and every grammar rules. As the app is so helpful and useful I recommend it to all.

First, I thank you from my heart for making so many English learning podcasts and programmes to us English learners. I genuinely love BBC it's convenient, I don't have to learn on the website and have programmes all in my pocket, and good user interface, good features... but please could you please add all BBC programmes to the app(including 2017,2016,...)? And could you please add functions like Microsoft OneDrive that we can learn it both online and offline, and you could think more, how to make BBC learning English app become the top 1!

This app is really interesting and it is very useful and good to learn vocabulary. At first I am very neglect about it and now I noticed that this is the only app which help me to progress in my knowing English. Thanks for the developer and I recommend this to everyone. But please fix this I cannot download through my own network/data, always need to connect wifi in order to download. Will be very thankful if you could fix this. Thanks 😊

I love this app. It's really helping me to learn English easily and Effortlessly. It would be better ,if the video plays one after another automatically. Because when I do my household works I used to listen this app daily .So, I feel it is difficult to select next videos in-between my works. I hope it would be useful to everyone .

Good app. I use for listening lessons while driving. It would be more convenient if I could switch off the screen and continue to listen (like you can do it in TED app or YouTube). Please add only audio mode.

Please just turn into the previous version. I just want it to be the podcast so i can listen to it everytime and everywhere. This version only contain the video, everytime i close it, it stops. :(

BBC are the leaders when it comes to media but with this app they are unstoppable. I use it for about 10-15 times a week and that has been enough to give me a lot of changes in my communication. Overall it is really good app to develop your English language.

I downloaded the App about an hour ago and had to comment on something find unfair in connection with the download section. I don't understand why download over WIFI is a REQUIREMENT. I think it is unfair to those without access to WIFI connections. There should be an option for DOWNLOAD OVER CELLULAR NETWORK if the person can and is willing to bear the cost. Please fix this problem. Although am yet to benefit from the App, I will like to rate 3 stars for now. Thanks.

As usual BBC contents are top. This is the modest opinion of a foreigner, not native English speaker that has always been trying to learn how to speak and talk better English and always found the best resources on BBC. Once again BBC came with a great tool, a very well done app, and of course great resources. Most people would not think how much work, passion and money are behind a big project like this. This app is exactly what i am looking for since i knew BBC 4 years ago. Perfect with audio, video and transcript at the same time, also clear sound. The images are high quality and the app speed is fast. I am totally satisfied with this official version from BBC. I hope Dramas programme will be added soon. Thank you very much!

App seems to be down for the past few days...please check. I've been using the app for the past few years, without a problem. Now, it just shows the green home screen at open and doesn't go to the homepage which houses the menu and various sections. Post dated 13 Dec 2021

That is a great app. Could you please add feature for moving forward/backward as on yourube by double click on right and left side of screen. And also for android low version some my friend are not able download app. If you will remove this restriction that will be great

What kind of app is that??? I tried using it both with wifi and cell phone data. The home page is completely blank. I updated to the latest version and still it does not work. I really hoped there would be an archive option to download previous lessons as well but could nof find it. Loading it takes ages and only names of programs appear with the follow option. Ok. followed them. What then? What about lessons of say 2017? The pictures here do not match the app. I'd suggest unofficial versions

It is wonderful tool for those who study to increase their listening skills but I think it can be much better. How it will be done I explain from my side. First, listeners usually need to stop audio and to rewind it but your player is not useful for this. Maybe you can change your player with one that has big play/pause and 5sec rewind button. As second, you can put new function on app which it will affiliate to follow the text during listening like highlighting the text

When I click on the notification that I'm interested, it launches the app and loads the home /main page. Not the content I clicked to reach. It's not a problem when you click on the notification as soon as you've received it, but let's say I saw my notifications hours (or a day) later. I click to see the content presented in notification, but unfortunately it's already buried way down to the ground. And I'm no archaeologist, so I close the app and even uninstall after a while.
