Very close to the lessons in my daughter's Chinese immersion classes, this app helping us be closer as a family because I can help her with her homework. I like the variety of learning exercises and the writing section in the practice tab- I just wish there was an option so I could practice writing ALL of the characters I've encountered in the lessons in the practice writing section instead of just a select few. It works better than flashcards to help me remember.

It forces some things on you, such as speech, to proceed. All portions should be optional (skippable). There are myriad reasons why people can't or don't want to pursue specific portions of learning a language (even if just at a specific moment or place). Also, this app changes format more often than parents change baby diapers, so, nearly each time you open it, it's very different. Not a huge fan of that. You can't tell where your progress is when the goal posts keep moving.

App is good, one of the best that I have tried to learn Chinese. I like the style of the lessons, also option to refresh your memory in reviews. However the biggest disadvantage of this app is that with no subscription, you can only access half of the lessons. Last free lesson is Restaurants 2. Afterwards from Helping out lesson, you need to be premium. I do not mind paying one time charge to access the rest of the lessons, but paying monthly, it's not cheap. Would it be possible to add option of one time charge to access the rest of the lessons? Thanks

This is a pretty decent app, but it has some significant shortcomings, especially once you reach the intermediate level. Review exercises always repeat the same sentences - you memorize them instead of learning the rules. All sentences in a lesson tend to follow the exact same pattern, so you don't learn how to construct your own sentences. There are also no speaking exercises in reviews.

It's lovely. Only through 2 lessons so far, but it's clean, memorable, and helpful, and hasn't even asked for any money yet (just a review). It has native speaker videos like Memrise, which is nice, and mini-podcast "teacher talk" segments that add fine details and cultural context. Follows a Duolingo-like series of unlocking lessons, which makes sense. All in all, I feel almost guilty not to have paid anything yet! Until I hit a paywall, I'd have to 100% recommend this app, no question.

An excellent introduction to Mandarin so far, and I appreciate that it has exercises for writing characters, speaking, and listening to/watching native speakers to practice the entire language. Individual types of exercise can be toggled off if you're only interested in learning to read or speak or watch Chinese media. Edit: video issues fixed! I wish the sound quality on some of them was better, but still bumping to a 5 b/c sound quality in real life isn't perfect anyways.

The app is essential for anyone looking to learn Mandarin. It teaches vocabulary along with the proper sentence structures used in everyday conversation. I've only been in China for 3 months and I already feel confident communicating with locals who are both surprised and impressed that I can speak fluently. It's all thanks to this app. I can only hope that the makers of this application can make many more iterations in different languages

Very good app for beginners to learn chinese. Only one little set back. In the photos . they speak the words and sounds so fast , i have a difficult time picking up on the correct pronunciation and hearing the sounds. I guess thats how it would be in a normal conversation. Thank you my friends for the hard word compiling all this together. Its a great app. Thank you again. 😀.

I like that writing the characters is a part of the process, unlike with Duolingo. I also haven't experienced any technical difficulties, like the loss of my progress that led me to delete Duolingo. My guess is that the more app developers try to hook their users, the more problems they create for their users... Please don't go down that route Hello Chinese. You have a good app, don't nerf it in the pursuit of profit

I started out with an audio podcast to learn Chinese, but I found as a native English speaker that I had trouble discerning certain sounds in the speech. This app gives you the audio and written words which I find makes it easier to distinguish between similar sounding words. I've been using this app nightly and I feel like it is really helping me pick up the language.

For years, I've been dreaming of a language app that compares my pronunciation to its audio files. I love that I get rated on my pronunciation, e.g., 4.8/5. The writing is cool, too. When it's on invisible mode, you get 3 tries to correctly recall and write the stroke. If you fail, you're shown it. You're even told if you're writing the stroke in the wrong direction and order. Thank you for smart UX!

It's a neat app to help you learn, although I'm not sure it's enough to learn from the scratch. IMO the app should have much higher daily goals: the highest one takes 10m. Character drawing's a bit clunky, not recognising hooks and lines, and I think the radicals you put in place work better. Voice recognition works fine, but not perfect, sometimes feeling like it's picky on different dialects (esp. 是). Videos with natives're great! Too bad the app has this weird caricature of a Chinese person.

"Learn Chinese - HelloChinese" is an amazing resource for those beginning their journey into Mandarin Chinese. It gives an introduction to correct pronunciation! What other app does that as successfully as this app? If the sound doesn't exist in English, the app explains it in a manner that is comprehensible by an English-speaker. HelloChinese's pacing is also extremely comfortable, but an option to challenge myself would also be nice. I will personally be using this as one of my main resources.

This made it super easy to learn chinese. I've been on it for a week now and i can type different sentences, but the only thing that i think should be different is having the ability to make an account on here. Because what if i get a new phone and i hadn't upgraded it. I would have lost all my progress and have to re-do it. When you upgrade, you gain access to alot more on the app. But i think its fair for everyone to be able to make their own account without upgrading. Great app though.

Way better than duolingo!! So pleased with this app. You have the option to learn Chinese characters or only pinyin. I'm not a purist, and I just need spoken language, so it is a much better option!! And you never lose "progress" on levels you have passed. You just have to review a ton of you stop practicing for a few weeks. There is also a flash card section so you can quiz yourself on whatever sections you need - family members, places, days of the week. The teacher talk section is great!!!

Probably the best starting place for beginners, bar none! Recent updates have improved it significantly, too. Don't dismiss this as a DuoLingo clone. I do have complaints, none that are showstoppers. The biggest is a lack in sentence variety. A lesson usually teaches grammar and vocabulary. But the app doesn't mix it up enough, whenever you see that grammar it'll always be using that vocabulary that came from the same lesson. This means you learn the pattern from context rather than fully recalling it. Review questions are taken from the lesson or are very similar. I'd like to review vocabulary in sentences using all the grammar I've learned, and vice versa. (Eventually things some are used again in later lessons, but too little too late.) Review questions are for some reason not in a random order, so you get a streak of questions all on the same topic. This means the second question is much easier since you just saw a similar question in the previous question (sometimes literally the same sentence twice in a row). They should just be scrambled completely, I hope this is fixed soon. There's too little room for free-recall. Mutliple choice questions shouldn't show you the choices until you tap, so that you have a chance to answer without any "hints". It's too easy to get the right answer by process of elimination, which should mean that the word needs to be reviewed again soon but instead it's marked correct and won't be shown again for too long. Other apps let you mark something as incorrect even if you get it "right" since you still need to review it. The "fluent in 5 minutes a day in 3 months" advertising is shamefully inaccurate. You can't complete the lesson content in twice that much time, let alone review and learn it. On the good side (and there's a lot), the character drawing is great, don't neglect it. The new memory aids for characters make it much easier to learn. The new "conversations" at the end of a lesson are fun and good review. The recordings of people off the street are great practice and everyone should do the review questions that use those. (They're substantially harder since you have to transcribe the spoken sentence via typing it out.) HelloChinese is good bang-for-the-buck with a very reasonable price (I haven't needed the highest tier subscription).

I like the app quite a bit, the grammar learning is pretty natural and the extra contextual lessons are really good. Removed one star because the video "man on the street" listening lessons are pretty bad, the audio quality is fairly poor and can't be skipped in lessons. Would say they should be put into their own area or allowed to skip, because even when I know what they are saying they usually mumble too much to hear one or two of the words.

This app is amazing. I am catching on much faster than I thought I would. The app has a lot of options to help you learn. For example, once I feel I've learned a lot of new material in one day, I can switch from live exercises to practice mode to cover words from lessons I've already completed. I also like the flash card and "difficult word" star to really identify which words are problems for you.
