Description of Lingvist: Learn Languages Fast

Based on the latest research in cognitive science & AI, Lingvist quickly predicts your current level & identifies which words will be most useful for you to learn next.

You can now learn 15 languages from English, including the culturally rich Japanese, Korean and learn Scandinavian languages Swedish, Danish or Norwegian.

Use Lingvist FREE for 14 days!

Lingvist helps you cultivate a healthy routine and lets you know once you’ve exceeded the optimal amount of daily study time. It keeps you challenged and tracks your progress using AI.

With the help of an intelligent AI-powered spaced repetition algorithm that continuously learns from our user base, Lingvist presents you problems that are on the tip of your tongue, just as you’re about to forget them.

Lingvist is designed for people who want to take their comprehension to the next level. Alongside a deck based on the most frequently used words in your target language, you can tailor the course with handcrafted decks in specialist subjects, ensuring that you’ll be ready for the language encounters relevant to you.

You can even prepare to have comfortable conversations about niche topics by uploading a textbook or Wikipedia article and having Lingvist generate a custom deck based on the content. Both custom and built-in Lingvist decks present your target vocabulary in a variety of realistic settings.

Lingvist doesn’t replace the most fun part of learning a language – speaking it with real people – instead, it will give you a firm foundation of vocabulary, with grammar tips concisely integrated into the experience, allowing you to rely on whichever balance of intuition and logic suits you best.

If you want to reach your language learning goals faster, whether it's fluency, pronunciation, confidence, or more technical vocabulary, there’s no app like Lingvist. From beginner to advanced user, there’s always a new idiom or grammatical structure to learn.

Full courses are available in European or Latin American Spanish, French, Japanese, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Korean, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Polish and Estonian. Speakers of other languages (Simplified Chinese, Dutch, Turkish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Russian, Estonian, Thai, Hindi, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Polish, Arabic and Ukrainian) can also learn English grammar and business English vocabulary with Lingvist.

i think it's pretty cool, though they need to add synonyms. I've used Duolingo for years and they've always had synonyms available. for example, you can put esposo or marido on any given "husband" translation exercise. I'm very sufficient in Spanish, but they need that. also, after the first bit, all the learn bits require an active subscription. i will probably use the grammar papers though. reading is also only in the pro version, so if you're looking for a free app, use Duolingo

I really had hopes high for learning more about the language that I'm currently learning more efficiently but once I hit "Get Started" I only had four options! None if those options were the language I was looking for! Since I didn't really get far, not being able to select a language I'll give it 3 stars because UI seemed nice and the ads I've seen look like the app would help. I was looking for Japanese.

I enjoy using this app and I have learned a great deal. I use it daily, alongside my other study routines, and I think I learn the most vocabulary from Lingvist. The feature to generate new content once you've learned all the words for a given language does not find the gender of new nouns, which would be helpful. I also think the features like Texts and Grammar are underutilized and could be displayed more prominently on the homepage or integrated with streaks somehow.

I love this app because I belive is better than Duolingo. I tried the free option for a week and I was so impressed with their quality that I subscribed for a whole year. What I like the most is the ability to type words and how the app adapts your learning experience based on your skills. Highly recommended!!!!! Please add for Spanish medical terminology.

This app is a good way to start supplementing your vocabulary while learning a language! It gives you new words and doesn't penalize you for not knowing them. The words are in context, and it gives additional context below the sentence if it is needed. It constantly pushes me slightly outside my area of knowledge, letting me learn and practice things like a new conjugation of a word I already know. 5/5

Did not like it. The option to speak your answer instead of type it was very nice. Definitions for words were not always complete and if context was needed to understand the exact situation a word would be used in it was very lacking. The words taught seemed to be all over the place and not in order of most used. One of the first words it taught me was "politics". Lastly, the tips at the bottom of the screen werent written well. Bad english and just made it even more confusing. Dont recommend.

I tried to 50-cards free for the assessment. While it looks like there is more emphasis on the user conjugating verbs (this makes it better than Duolingo), I was hoping the assessment algorithm would scale up sufficiently to place me. Instead, it seems to follow a linear number-of-words progression - like many apps - that leave us with a weakness in conjugating verb tenses and expressing our thoughts beyond "travel book" level. Lingvist may be closest to bridging that gap, but can go further.

The best measure of success is that I'm using this app almost every day for the past two+ months (5/week based on the metrics). I feel much more confident in my vocab. I haven't been able to stick with a language learning course since college. This app is great for folks with a bit of Spanish background who want to grow their vocabulary (me, for example). Could be good for others, too, but I'm not them, so I wouldn't know...

It's easy to use and the reinforcement seems effective. One thing I'd suggest is that when a wrong answer is given that has a meaning that's *close* to the correct one, a brief explanation as to the distinction between the two could be presented. E.g., in French, "informations" vs. "nouvelles." Obv this would have to be limited, but I think it would be helpful.

Lingvist quickly starts putting words into sentences, which has really helped me get a sense of the grammar of the language. Some of the word choices are odd--it's very business focused--so I've been using it alongside Duolingo to get some of the more common words (colors, food items, etc). But I am usually able to skip through the Duolingo levels after one pass through because Lingvist has given me such a solid foundation.

Really good for learning new vocabulary that goes beyond the usual textbook word lists, but what really stands out with Lingvist is how thoughtfully the app is being developed. Each update has significantly improved the learning experience - it is obvious that the developers are listening to feedback and actually care about making it better. A very high-quality, learning-focused app. 5 stars.

I really liked Lingvist before the new update, but now it keeps crashing and I am unable to use the app. I even tried uninstalling it and using it on a different device to no avail. I also wish the speaking feature was free as that's a great way to learn a language and shouldn't be part of the paid experience. I hope the app is fixed soon so I can continue my studies.

its a very nice app! the pronunciation is great and i love the way the cards go by and you fill them out and there are notes on them. kinda reminds me of quizlet which is cool my 1 thing i dont like about it is how *expensive* the full version is. i get that they need to make money and all that but a year subscription is like 90 dollars i think? if you opt for just one month then its like 22 dollars which is wild. pros: very smooth app, doesnt my my phone freeze like duolingo does. cons: PRICE
A Google user
it's mostly good but there is one big problem. I'm learning Spanish. it wants me to translate "school". according to this app, "school" is randomly either "escuela" or "colegio" and if you guess the wrong one, it counts as a wrong answer. my husband is from Mexico, speaks Spanish fluently and does not understand why they have done this. aside from this issue, this app is more fun than duolingo even though it's repetitive. i don't mind the repetitiveness, i prefer it.

Lingvist is a useful way to learn and review vocabulary. I think flashcards with only a target language word and its translation are too stale and not reflective of real world context, so in this way Lingvist's system makes a big improvement by providing context. Some UX issues, but a very good app. Note regarding my previous review: If you aren't given a placement test to start, you can create a new account (e.g. with a different email address) and test when you create that account.
A Google user
Really enjoy the implemented teaching method, regretfully the app continuously crashes and won't work again until several minutes later. Even restarting the app surprisingly doesn't rectify the problem. I would strongly consider purchasing a premium membership but not until the bug is fixed. "El" seems to be a problem word as that's usually the word out crashes on, could also be a coincidence.
A Google user
I was initially disappointed because I thought this app was designed just to help you learn vocabulary versus learning grammar and useful phrases, but by continuing to use it I've found that I'm learning all of the above more efficiently and effectively than other apps (including Memrise and Duolingo). I like the ability to practice speaking the language myself with the microphone/voice-enabled feature, and to practice listening to people speaking the language, too!
Noah Justice
Rather than being an effective way to learn languages, isolated vocabulary words basically don't stick in the memory. What is needed is to have the learner construct entire sentences all at once, for that's the best simulation of speech there is, and in that way one sees how all the parts fit together. This app is a waste of time. You might try Mango Languages instead, which may be free for you depending on your library card.
